OB sub frame questions
« on: 29 Jan 2020, 11:20 pm »
Do the H or W frame designs play a role beyond structural stability? Can the dual sub kits be built as plain flat baffles with support in the back? Maybe in a U configuration with a flat front and support wings on the sides in the rear. This is purely an aesthetic and WAF consideration.

- Yes, they extend the effective baffle width keeping the front wave from cancelling the back wave.

- See this for more information - https://www.hifizine.com/2012/12/subwoofer-origami/

Maybe in a U configuration with a flat front and support wings on the sides in the rear.

- See the preceding URL.  The H-Frame has a figure-8 radiation pattern.  The U-Frame has a cardioid radiation pattern.

And by separating that front and back wave, with the H frame or W frame side wings, the lower range is extended as well.

You can do it with a U shape frame as well, but it puts a LOT of pressure in the rear chamber and needs a LOT more bracing, structural support, and resonance control.
