Dodd preamp info.
« on: 25 Jan 2020, 08:47 pm »
Well I recently purchased a Dodd variable gain preamp. It did not come with any instructions. I would like to get a copy or pdf of them. Any info would be greatly appreciated Ken
I’m very impressed with the sound, it’s definitely staying in my system.

I  am not sure there would have been an owner's manual with these .....
When my Dodd variable gian pre is in the  system, I  run an early 80's 6N30P - DR

What  output caps  are in your piece  ?

Gary pretty much built that unit for the 6N30P - DR, but any good quality 6dj8 type will work.  I've even been pleased with 7dj8's.  They all sound different, and Dodd preamps are very receptive to tube rolling.  There are things I've liked about Seimens, Amperex, Lorenz, Austrian Valvo, and even JJ's.

the nice part   is/was  you could  pick up the  earlier 6DJ8/7DJ8's far cheaper  than the 6922's or ECC88's.   I  have an early  Mullard  6DJ8 and an   Amperex 6DJ8 BB   that  both sound great  as well.   Sad how   much  these     older   "used to be hidden gems"  have  become

There used to be a thread in  the Tube-o-Phile circle that had  some    not so common   ideas... think a few were from the 6N6P family but  can't  recall  what the thread was called

Look at the Russian 6n1p tube.  Has less filament current draw to the 6H30P-DR or 6H30-Pi.

I believe Gary used them in the DAC60 mods.

He used them in my phono pre, and I've been hard pressed to find anything better.

First of all, I appreciate all the input and the different tube suggestions, Right now I am using a pair of electro harmonix  6H30Pi, and I have a pair of 6DJ8 Mullards, and  6DJ8  Amperex.  These are the tubes that came with it when I purchased it. Also this is my first tube preamp, But certainly looking forward to try some different tubes. Thanks Ken

Hey Jay, it has Sonicaps with sonicaps platinum bypass caps.

You aren't likely to notice much difference between the E.H. Pi and Russian DR except in your wallet.  They're both very detailed at normal listening levels.

S Clark, I appreciate that bit of information, being that I need a pair of them. Right now the E.H. Pi are my favorite, but I have not gave my other tubes much listening time.

HAL, I did order a pair of vintage NOS Russian 6N1P tubes to try. Thanks Ken

A little OT  but   still   regarding the Dodd pre's...  when did Gary   migrate to the single  tube  versions  when he  used the    hiding   some   components/cirucits

Actually, the very first run of 20 battery pre's that Gary built were potted (I have one).  He told me that the circuitry wasn't that complex and potting was simpler than farting with patenting.
