update my system
« on: 21 Jan 2020, 05:13 pm »
I have an old system that is overdue for total update.
I am looking for low budget system ($5000 - $6000) that will include the following: SACD player/media player, integrated amp and a pair of speakers.
I will appreciate suggestions.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

Welcome Meni :thumb:
As always I would suggest a small tube amp and a hi sensitivity speaker and if you have a small room even a no xover fullrange driver.

Welcome to Audio Circle. 5 - 6k is enough to put together a pretty nice system, but if it were me, I’d forego the SACD player in favour of a streamer with a half decent DAC. Think Tidal or Qobuz... The choice amplifier would depend on the speakers and the choice of speakers would depend on your room, bass expectations and taste in music.  :D :D

Let me update my introduction with my preferences.
I listen mostly to classical music.(baroque to modern and post-modern era).
I love(d) the planar speakers sound (Magnepan) it's detail, air, transparency and sound stage.
I am definitely looking for a solid state amp ( high power/current if driving low sensitivity/ low impedance transducer).
The room now is much smaller than the one, the old system was located in. (relocated). The dimensions are 18' x 18' x 9'.
This should narrow the selections for a system that will work for me.
P.S.
I had in mind the following:
Sony SCD-XA5400ES
Harman Kardon HK 990
Magnepan MG 1.7 i (these might be too big for the music/family room)

There are posts about the new Magnepan LRS (e.g. https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=166948.0  and  https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/magna-riser-airborne-stands/ and I'm sure others), which are a bit smaller.  The web page is here - https://www.magnepan.com/model_LRS  They include a 60 day in home trial and are $650 (and if you like them you can always then get the upgraded stands noted above).  Don't forget a place like Accessories4Less (or used - e.g go to hifishark.com) where good deals can be had in all price ranges - https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/integratedamp/home-audio/receivers-amps/integrated-amps/1.html?&r=5e271c67  They also have players as well - https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/cdplayer/home-audio/audio-components/cd-sacd-players/1.html?&r=5e2796e5  (and also streamer/DACs if file playback is of interest to you and there's a discless circle here as well).  Keep in mind that disc players (of any brand) have a transport with software written for that specific transport mechanism and the manufacturers don't make a particular transport mechanism forever, and, therefore, the older the disc player model, the closer it likely is to being obsolete.  Once one can't obtain a replacement for the transport, then you don't have a useful piece of hardware any longer.

I own Magnepan 1.6's and MMG's.  They love high power and high current high quality amplification.  I would look at  a Parasound HINT integrated and a pair of Magnepan LRS or 0.7's and a good non ported sub like a Rhythmik, SVS or Martin Logan Dynamo.  I run dual Martin Logans and they integrate seamlessly.

Please don't skimp on amplification with Maggies if you go that route.

Then pick a streamer of your choice.  Or-

This puts you at about $6K or less.

One other integrated to take a look at with tons of features is the Peachtree Nova 300 or 150 version 2.0.  I am considering one for a second system with my MMG's.
