X/O upgrade question...
« on: 12 Feb 2005, 07:48 pm »
I am changing out the drivers and X/Os in my Norh Prism 6.1s to those found in the 6.9s. Is there any advantage to mounting the X/Os outside of the speaker cabinets or making any other changes when installing the new X/Os that would benefit the sound(other than replacing the internal wire)?
  Thanks...

Yes, truant,

I think there are sonic advantages to externalising the crossovers - I presume you are talking about passive crossovers here?  If you think about how we spend a heap of time minimising vibration getting to components, having coils and caps inside a speaker box - where they are being bombarded with sound waves - just doesn't make sense (but of course, it's neat!!).  :)

Now I don't know what sort of quality of components Norh uses in their crossvers but, if they're anything like Magnepan, you should take the opportunity to replace the caps and coils with audiophile-grade stuff (ie. don't buy the 6.9 crossovers, merely get the schematic and make it up yourself).

Typically, these are all much bigger than the stock components but, if they're all ouside the speaker box, it's not an issue.  Just build yourself a nice perspex box to put the crossover in.

Regards,

Andy

thanks Andy. I have already purchased the X/Os from Norh but for me this seemed like the easiest way to get started on the upgrade path. But I am inclined to not mount them inside the speaker cabinet. From that point I can expand my horizons further by upgrading the X/O itself.
