Got a factory tour!!!

I had a chance to meet Bob and his crew and get a first hand tour of his production facility or what will soon be his production facility.   Since their listening area was not yet completed I didn't get a chance to hear the magic but I expect my next visit will include a serious ear candy session.

I did have the opportunity to see a couple pairs of Bobs speakers which were nothing short of top-notch.  As a professional woodworker/cabinet builder myself I have critical eye for cabinet construction, veneering and finsihing.   My eyes scoured these cabinets for even the smallest blem....nothing.  This is artwork if I've ever seen it.

Can't wait to hear them.

Christof,

Sounds good, especially because one of the pairs you saw under construction is my pair of Revelation, first set of SP speakers with the new Scan Speak tweeter. According Bob, this tweeter is going to break new grounds in terms of performance. X-over point will come down from 950 Hz to probably around 700 Hz. Furthermore it is extremely smooth and very low in distortion.

700Hz!!!

man those guys are wicked engineers.  Talk about low crossover point.

Do they use 24dB/octave slopes or higher order slopes still?

Sounds like one hell of a tweeter.

It's a 24dB/octave slope. The tweeter has it's -3dB point @ 500 Hz, so it is not really a problem to go this low.

And yes, it is a very impressive performance, like the best from electrostat, tape and conventional domes in one.... Talk about dynamic capabilities, oh yes

The new tweeter should also have a little more extension on top.

I’m very happy for Bob, I think with having a new shop up and running soon will let him be a little more creative in his products later on.

You are right about the extension.

I know there are a lot of new SP products on their way :) Not to mention that the production bottle neck should be solved, this means shorter delivery times. I know that Bob had to work like a mad man to keep up with things in the old facilities. Well he probably still has to work like crazy, but the throughput will defenitely be increased.

Well I got a chance to sit down with Bob and have a session with his Continuum speaker.  This paticular pair did not have the new tweeter upgrade.  Bob remarked that the new tweeter upgrade takes the edge off and makes his Continuum a whole new beast.  Until I hear the new tweeter I cannot comment on this improved sound.  Honestly I do not understand how he could improve upon the sound of his old design.

The session included a variety of musical styles including jazz, vocals, some wicked bossa nova, a bit of this and a little of that.  Being a guitar and mandolin player my ears always seem to key in on the sound of acoustic instruments.  I search for the tone and color of the resonating wood when critically listening to speakers and rarely find it.  During the acoustic tracks Bob played I not only heard the tone and color of the instruments but in a strange way I could almost feel the instruments in my hands.  I've not ever experienced sound in such a realistic, 3 dimensional manner :o

Thanks for letting me sneak in for a listen Bob

Regards
Chris
