Magnepans
« on: 3 Jan 2020, 05:05 am »
I like Magnepans, really, really like Magnepans.  From the small on walls to the currently broken large MGCIIIs.  I probably have too many. A pair of MGWs work great.  Gave a pair of MGAs to a friend his dog broke the drivers-back they came. MGBs picked up for 20 dollars.  DWMs to augment the bottom.  The MGCIII were sold as needing a pair of tweeters, alas, the mids were gone also.  Just can't decide whether the MGCIIIs are worth sending in for repair.  Last a MG C2 center not in use,

Currently in use for 2chan and home theater, the DWMs with Mye stands augmenting a pair of M/L Clarities for mains.   1 MGB under the tv for center channel duty.  The DWMs 40 to 200hz imho really help the Clarities 8" woofer, seems to bring greater definition in it's range.  I was using the MGWs for the mains-then the Clarities came up for 800 and couldn't resist.  First had them set up side by driven by a Digital Amplifier Co older 4800a.  The maggies were better for me in the 1k to 5k band.  The Clarities shine from about 12k on up.  Kept the Clarities on line for now.

Next post will work up amps and pre and source.  This is my first post, sorry for any confusion.

Thank you all for the welcome.  FRM, without toe in they still convey a firm, stable image.  Imaging can be made wider with tweeter side of the panel on the outside.  Soundstage is wide, deep and very stable.  Two musician friends occasionally visit, a drummer and bass player.  Both are amazed at the liveliness of the sound.  Using the SACD version of Steely Dan's Gaucho, the bass player always comments on the attack of rim shots.  Maggies can be difficult to set up, four feet from back wall, same for side walls.  Lots of power, 200wpc min, with large current available for peaks.  All of the above is in my experience only, have not heard a dealer demo or setup.

You are welcome FullRangeMan.  Do these extra posts count toward my 3 requisite postings?

Amps that did not work for the Magnepans, Dynaco ST70 and Epicure OpAmp One, both given away.  Crown DC150 and DC300.  BGW 620 and 750, gathering dust.  MTX Soundcraftsman S800 x3 gathering dust.  Acurus a200, given away, Acurus 2003 x 2, one broke, one gathering dust.  JBL Synthesis 150, gathering dust 2 Synthesis 800's, one given away other may or may not be broke gathering dust.  JBL AVA7 copy of a Lexicon, both made in LA by ATI, The AVA7 liked to have burned up trying to push Magnepans, the Lex has a 4ohm switch, the JBL comes with a warning 8 ohm only (had to try the maggies).  Signature Technologies tube waiting for my ESS AMT1 Heils to be configured into a play system.  2 Marantz MA700s gathering dust.  BK AV6000 gathering dust.  Parasound Zamp, small, used for portable testing of equipment.  For various reasons most are no longer used

Current amp setup, Denon POA6600 for subs xover below 70, Denon POA6600 for center channel.  Mains in vertical biamp 2 Crown XLi800s, surround sides Crown XLi800, surround rears Crown DAC4800a.

I have been buying amps for 50 some years.  Most amps came from ebay used and great prices.  The CrownXLi800s were all open box for about 210 each.
