Van Alstine AVA Omega 3 power amp
« on: 27 Oct 2019, 08:34 pm »
This is Frank van Alstine’s AVA Omega 3 power amp built into a Hafler XL280 chassis. I am the original owner of the Hafler. I sent it to Frank for an upgrade to an Omega 2 and several years later he upgraded it to the Omega 3.

This is a great amp with 140 watts a channel and it can drive difficult loads. For many years I used it to power my Infinity Kappa 8’s and they dropped below 2 ohms at some frequencies.

This is a nicely voiced amp too.  It’s easy to listen to music for hours and hours.

The case is in good shape with a few minor, light scratches on top. The substantial fins are not bent nor is the sheet metal dinged or dented. Very presentable and a conservative 7/10.

The speaker terminals were replaced a while back. They accept spades, bare wire, banana and pin terminations.

I took off the cover and looked over the capacitors and did NOT see any that were leaking or bulging.

Captive power cord.

This is an opportunity to get a high performance amp for less than half of Frank’s current entry level solid state model And Frank still offers upgrades for this chassis.

I no longer have a surround system - these were powering my back channels until I sold the Kappa 8’s -someone else should be enjoying this amp.

This is now listed for sale on the AVA website, used equipment section.  It has been checked out by Frank and has a one year warranty.

Is this a two channel or three channel amp? And does it double down into a 4ohm load?

Two channel amp.  Van Alstine rates it 135 watts a channel.

This amp does very well with low impedance speakers.  I ran Infinity Kappa 8's which dropped to 2 ohms (maybe a bit less) at certain frequencies.  This amp easily handled it at pretty decent sound levels.  I had this set up for many years.

I decided to focus on two channel sound so no more need for the amp or speakers.  I went with Bryston 28 mono blocks if you are curious.
