Absolutely is the same guy. I remember Audio (I think) magazine doing a profile of him. His day job is as a military analyst - audio is his hobby that developed into a part time job. I give him credit for turning me on to tube equipment early on during the tube resurgence in the mid-80's.  He wrote a nice piece for Audio that explained why companies like CJ and ARC were developing cult followings. Led to me buying my (late) VTL amp a few years later.

Mr. Cordsman also did the last phono cartridge  overview over a decade ago
in Stereophile  with any measurements of physical or electrical performance
parameters.  Since then no measurements have been done.  Not even simple frequency response graphs have been published. Meanwhile the cost  has sky rocketed with at least one cartridge over $6,000, and some people wonder why Stereophile no longer has any credibility. Pardon my rant ,Scotty

I always liked his writing for Audio magazine.  Too bad it went under- it was always my favorite.

Always thought it was a strange pairing....war and hi-fi. But it sometimes is a battle to get the "right sound"... :? [/list:u]

Tony is a very nice guy.  I remember him best for some of the "shootout" reviews he did back in the '80s.  I think he may have been with Stereophile at the time, and he would take 7 or 8 amps, and in a single review compare all of them.  Great for the reader, hated by the manufacturers.

Brings back memories of being in college procastinating doing my homework as I read Anthony's reviews in Audio and Stereophile. Then I was surprised to see him regularly on TV during Desert Storm 1992.

And I recall reading articles by Marty back in 1992 when he praised the Chapman T7s which are still one of my all time favorites, or did I get the wrong Marty?

i still believe ahc's s'phile review of the original adcom gfa555 power amp, (retail $600),  back in about 1984, was the opening salvo against the idea that true hi-end sound could be had w/o mortgaging the house....

Hi Al:

That was most likely me.  I liked the Chapman T7 a lot.  I haven't heard from the company in years, is it still around?

You could start a whole reminiscence thread of dear departed audio companies.

Some left just because times changed and their forte was in the past, such as Ampex.

Some left and I can't explain why, such as California Audio Labs.

That doesn't hardly start the ball rolling on this topic...

Ok, I'll bite. In the 1980's John Bau released the Spica TC-50, a time and phase coherent speaker which captured the hearts of audiophiles across North America. The Spicas were crazy cheap for the time. Praise for the Spicas was unequivocal. Further models were released.

Spica was bought by Parasound, IIRC. Bye bye.

Hi Marty,

Last I checked Chapman Audio Systems is still in business in Vashon Island Washington. No website.

A local shop, Hawthorne Stereo, has a mint set sitting in original boxes for less than a third the orignial price. Very tempting to try them to see how they would compare with today's standards.
