Aye Mates! This salty sailor requests ye assistance on building a home theater. Arr but there be trouble a brewin …. The little Mrs. has taken control of me’s treasure and she be a watchin me with one big red hairy eye! :jester:

My goal is to have a relaxing area to watch TV for the family and  be able to watch movies with that “Theater Like” experience. Another goal here is to also  create a thread that will help consolidate your experience and knowledge for others to refer to in the near future.

Your help would be appreciated in room design including seating, floor,  wall and ceiling treatments, lighting, and equipment placement along with speaker type and placement. Also needed is your expertise in choosing equipment. ?“I’M SO CONFUSED!”:bomb: The technology is changing so fast and varied that confusion has set in. Plasma? LCD? Projection? HD? Blue laser, Red laser? digital? 5.1 or 7.1?

Existing room is a 20’x 20’ with 8’ ceiling. One corner has a 10’x 6’ enclosed storage area. The room was flooded out after Christmas so there is no carpet with only concrete exposed at this time. (Thus the reason for the remodel :singing: ).

First off is a budget:

My construction and carpentry skills are pretty extensive however I would prefer not to raise the ceiling or move an exterior wall at this time (hehehe).

To help give an idea of what I am thinking of spending these are the speakers I am leaning towards http://www.ascendacoustics.com . You may have a better choice and I am open to your suggestions.

If this thread works I will add pictures as we progress. :thumb:

Well, one piece of equipment you might consider is a bilge pump. No salty sailor would be caught dead without one.

I would not make a decision until after the construction.  In the mean time, try to listen to whatever you can.  Since you can build with wood be sure to check out DIY speakers!

Be sure to wire for 7.1 even if you start out with 5.1.  Add in a couple dedicated A/C lines.

Room treatment may be the most importand issue for a square room.  You may want to take the door off the 10x6 room and stuff it full of fiberglass :D   Check out Rieves room mode calculator, plug in your numbers and ask someone what they mean  :P

Budget, we need a budget.  av123 has some nice packages, as well as, other manufacturers here.  Seriously, check out DIY.

Edit:
As far as electronics go, if you are going to go the receiver route check out the receivers with auto room correction.  By the time you are done finishing the room there should be second generation recievers with this feature.

 Yes! That's why I'm here, since the water heater broke.  With the modifications I made this should not be a problem in the future.

Sounds like a partitian wall may be needed to adjust the room size. This can be done. What size do you think would work best?

A wall of built in speakers ? Good! I like that :D . I am not aware of any kits available maybe you could elaborate a little?

7.1 or 5.1 system? Extra wires are not a problem , great idea . See that's the kind of information I am looking for.
