This CRC-RCA 5R4GY Coke-bottle shaped tube is the rare and superior sounding first generation version with the double “V shaped” getters, dark brown base, and smooth plates.
I compared this to another vintage GE tube as well as the famous Brimar 5R4GY. This RCA is my favorite. Very fast, full bandwidth, liquid and punchy in my preamp. Only selling due to sale of preamp.
This has even been compared to the Western Electric 274 B super tube (see Brent Jesse description below- he sells this RCA for $200 a piece).
“New Old Stock White Box, ST "coke bottle" shape, military spec tubes. Not to be confused with the later JAN RCA version of this tube, that only has a single bottom getter. These are the first production 1940s World War II type, with the double D bottom getters set at angles to each other in the bottom of each tube ("V" shape), hanging filaments (top "fishing pole" filament supports) long dull black plates, extra support rods, very dark brown base and circular top mica. This tube will rival if not outperform the famed 274B Western Electric, and they are just as scarce. Save $800 over the 274B and we guarantee you will agree this is the best! All have the early type dark brown micanol base with the military markings. Tested for low noise and perfect internal matching. This is the rectifier people are talking about, no one else has this early version of this incredible tube! COMMENTS ON THE 1940S 5R4GY: "Hi Brent, The CRC Jan rectifiers are superb. My system is bi-amped and i put them in the amps covering the top end (400 hz on up). They give the sound a large dose of liquid, natural texture as well as providing even more transparency. A lovely improvement in sound. They relax the sound while adding more nuance and inner detail at the same time. thank you!! R.C." COMMENT #2: "The 5R4GY 1940s vintage V-getter tubes are wonderful. My first impression was of transparency and speed although they sounded a bit thin in tone. Since then they have developed great depth of tone and to my surprise after about a month the bass improved quite noticeably. Sound staging is also superb. The other aspect that is notable is that the bias is rock solid. I am very impressed. Thanks for the recommendation”
My tube tests NOS at 92/100 where 54 is minimum on a calibrated Hickock 539B tester. I will ship in white box and pack very safely. I ship USPS Priority so it usually arrives in 2-3 days.
Thanks for looking.
