Mastering engineer question - How do you get 5.1 from 2.0?

I was reading this blurb on a website about how they used the original 2-track tape of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" in order to release the new fangled surround mix.  I haven't heard the 5.1 DSOTM but I do have a tiny handful of multi-channel re-released albums from recordings which obviously began life as 2-channel mixes.

I know generally about the taking the in-phase center whosits to get the center channel and then some other phase malarkey to get the rears trick. (the Dolby thingy, right?) But what I'm hearing on these mixes sounds like discreet instruments panned around the five speakers.  How the heck is that possible with a 2-track source?  I can't fathom how you can have guitars in front and a synthesizer sweeping around the rears unless they were using the  separately tracks from the original recording.  Are my ear deceiving me?  Is there a special trick to this?  Some of this stuff seems like it would be impossible once the instruments were bussed together.

Any clues would be most appreciated.  Thanks! :)

The master has to be in multiple tracks!  In just listening to their original issue vinyls, you can hear different layers.

You can't do a 5.1 mix without the multitrack masters. No way.

Surround Magazine has some articles on how it's done- they had a better one a while back but I can't find it.   They do go back to the individual tracks, pre-stereo-mixdown.  I'm not sure how you could do a discrete MC mix from a stereo master, but someone's probably got some goofy technology to do it (how well, I can't say).

Okay, I think I just got confused.  This is the site I am referring to.

You'll notice that there's links to articles below.  Well, those articles aren't actually about the multi-channel SACD release specifically, they're about the vinyl remaster.  Somewhat misleading, but I can see now why I got confused.      The SACD 5.1 mix was done by James Guthrie, from (presumably) the original multiple tracks.

Quote from: interview
Acoustic Sounds: Did you master the 5.1 surround mix also? What is your impression of the mix?

Doug Sax: Yes, I did. I think James (Guthrie) did a superb job in really using the 5.1 channels while still maintaining the original feel of the two-channel mix. Every band member loves the 5.1 that James did.

PF was using quatrophonic surround in their concerts in the early '70s way before DSOTM so the master tapes are most likely recorded multi-track, not 2-track.
