JVC RX-ES1 won't recognize my digital input???
« on: 21 Jan 2005, 04:38 am »
I just bought a used JVC RX-ES1sl on eBay, and it didn't come with a manual or a remote.

I figured out how to use the buttons to turn off SUB, center and surround, and set the front speakers to large.

I run my CD players SPDIF digital output into the digital coax input (1 - DVD).

It doesn't work. The panel reads (Analog L R). I know on my Panasonic XR45, it reads (DIGITAL) when I connect an SPDIF signal to its input. How do I get it to recognize that its being fed a digital input?

Is my amp broken, or is it configured poorly?

I also notice that I get no sound on AM or FM, but I cannot figure out how to change the station tunings!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I think you need to go into the setup and assign the digital inputs to the different settings, i.e. DVD=OPT1 etc.  I could be confusing that with my Panny though.  To switch between analogue and digital I think I was using a button on the remote.   I will check when I get home today and report back if no one else answers your questions.

From the front panel settings, all you can do is switch the digital input # between DVD, DBS and TV. I cannot figure out how to tell it to actually take the digital inputs instead of analog inputs. (I tried it with the analog, and the amp did work.)

On my XR45, it figures it out by itself - you don't need to tell it to look for digital inputs.

I'm hoping its not a 'remote only' option ont he JVC, or I won't be able to use it :(

IanVan, I think you need to choose 'digital' on the remote (only)....I don't think there is another way to configure your ES1sl to recognize the digital signal.  It's a button marked 'digital' that you push to configure it on the remote.

I hope I'm wrong, but I believe so  :|

That was awfully nice of ya' Bubba... :thumb:

Nice catch Bubba, that should help sort things out in short order.

As for the manual, well, I might be able to get a copy and shoot it over to you - I sold mine to a good friend, I am sure I can take care of that.

PM me, and I will help you get that covered off.

Anything for a fellow Canuck, AC member, and JVC enthusiast (for the record the JVC that I STILL have is the little FS-X1, an "executive" unit with cd, tuner etc - great little sound).

Thanks for the offer, but I was hoping not to need one :) Once set up, the only thing I ever plan on touching for the life of the unit is the volume control.  Is there anything in the manual about how to control the digital on/off using a universal remote function?

Thanks a lot.

OK I read the manual.  Its a remote control funtion only to select either analogue or digital on the inputs.  But you can juggle the various digital inputs between the TV, DVD, and DBS settings.  Not that knowing that helps much at this point.

Does anyone know of a way to capture the codes from a remote using an irDA port?  I can shoot my remote at my laptop, capture the code and send it to you if you would be able to download it to a remote.

Just a thought.
