Has anyone seen director's cut of "Kalifornia"??
« on: 18 Jan 2005, 07:53 pm »
Netflix has the DVD of "Kalifornia" with the description that it includes the "extremely bloody" director's cut.  Though it's been a few years since I last saw this movie (Brad Pitt, David Duchovny, Juliette Lewis & Michelle Forbes), I remember it as being fairly disturbing even in its R-rating version. Pitt's Early Grayce character scared me much more than  Hannibal Lector of "Silence of the Lambs" (roughly contemporary).

Anyone know if I'll wet my pants (or worse) if I rent the director's cut??

Apparently both versions are on the DVD?:

Guess you decide in the menu which cut you want to watch.

I have this one on DVD, and when I watched the Unrated Director's Cut, I didn't really notice anything more than the original, though there is supposed to be another minute of stuff... i found the second time i went through the movie slightly boring, even though i really enjoyed the movie the first time. Just my opinion :)

A MINUTE??? The description makes it sound like there's alot more than an extra minute; I would almost have expected whole deleted scenes to have been restored.

A minute can make a significant difference.

The difference between the theatrical cut of Robocop, and the cut on the Criterion DVD is around 40 seconds. Yet that 40 seconds was enough to get it an X rating (for violence) if it'd been released like that.

And that 40 seconds is enough to change the tone of the movie in those two scenes. Before the cut the violence went over the top and made it comedic in a very dark manner. Once the cut was made it the violence was no longer over the top and was then rather evil & sadistic. :o

Watching the two versions makes the R rated cut the worse of the two cuts as it's definitely more evil than the X rated cut. :shake: Makes you wonder if the MPAA has even the slightest clue about what they're doing...
