SciFi's new series Battlestar Galactica has actually been a pleasant surpise to me. I enjoyed the miniseries (caught it in repeats), and the saw the first two regular episodes tonite ("33" and "Water"). I'll admit I was skeptical when I heard the series was being remade, then more worried when I saw the casting. But it appears my worries were unfounded.
Much of the original mythos is intact- the cylons have changed in that they now look human (whether to keep the cost of F/X down or for story reasons I can't say). The effects are overall very good, although I think they ruined the look of the Vipers & Raiders. It's also humorous to see how they've ripped off the basic feel & style of Joss Whedan's superb Firefly series, especially the with the zooms & pans in the space scenes. The ladies are hot, the acting is good, and they've managed to keep the good elements of the old series but take it in a slightly different direction. Not at all campy, they are aiming for a drama that happens to be science fiction.
Hopefully this one will maintain the current high quality and manage to get picked up for a few years. The SciFi network's track record with original shows is abysmal- maybe this will turn it around.
