Hi,

Joining after a visit to Jim Salk's workshop in Pontiac, MI this week to audition his speakers. Very enjoyable session with a very knowledgeable and friendly person. Jim mentioned AudioCircle as a good place to read up on everything audio, so, here i am.

Have gradually revamped my 1980's-1990's system starting from the source, preamp and amp over the past few years and now finally checking out new speakers.

Source:     From Linn Mimik CD Player                    To FLAC MacMini, Audirnava Plus adn Exogal Comet Plus DAC
Preamp:    From Tara Labs Space and Time tube     To Purity Audio Basis tube
Amp:        From  AudioLab 8000A                          To Music Bella Ibrido 300/600
Speakers   From Monitor Audio Studio 10's             To be determined

Looking for any input on acquiring a pair of dynamic, revealing, accurate, precisely imaged, transparent speakers, leaning towards analytical vs warm, for near field listening in 16x16' room from $5k to $15k.  Do not need overpowering bass, but, must make a jazz trio and female vocals sound as live as I can afford!

Leaning towards full range vs. monitors+sub. Ease of speaker placement is preferred.

I am listening to:

Live jazz recordings (Keith Jarrett Trio, Pat Metheny Trio, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock)
Female vocalists (Joni Mitchell, Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLaughlin, Holly Cole, Patricia Barber)
My guitar heros  and their bands (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Hendrix, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Page, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Al DiMeola, Steve Howe, Ralph Towner)
New Grass (Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, Punch Bros)
And much, much more...

Cheers,

Frank

Frank,

Welcome to AC.

Auditioning Jim’s speakers is a fantastic first step. I was torn between buying a Salk creation and a Daedalus Audio speaker for 3 years as I saved $$$$ towards them. I finally chose a pair of Daedalus Apollo floor standing speakers.

You won’t go wrong with Salk speakers nor with Daedalus speakers.

Enjoy the journey. Buy speakers that make you happy.

Michael

Frank, welcome aboard!  We live about 1.5 hours drive apart (Owosso).

My audio club is small and centered around Howell, with members from Dearborn to Lansing to Homer to Pinckney.  Looks like we're going to the September 16 Patricia Barber concert in Ann Arbor if you're interested in joining us.

I just scored a pair of JBL 708P active monitors that you're more than welcomed to come hear (I'm retired so available most of the week).  Just bring a list of your Tidal favorites.  From your description they'd fit your (and my) preferences perfectly (just not expensive enough  :green:) and you could sell your new amp.  Read my glowing equipment review.

Thanks for the welcomes and comments.  Couple of things.

1) John Ambercrombie definitely on my hero list, as is Bill Frisell, Larry Coryell.  Always look for new talent.
2) Not guitars only listener, but, guitars, piano, vocals and double-bass are on my audition lists because I know how they should sound, or at least how I like them to sound. Electronic keyboards are tougher.
3) Not in a huge hurry.  It's summer so I am not spending a lot of time in my man cave.
4) Will drive to St Louis and Chicago over the next several months and plan to audition at points in-between
5) My brother is Charles Hunt, you may have seen some of his concert reviews, including this from last Friday's Punch Brothers show at the Royal Oak Theatre.  You might see us together at some shows.

6) If I'm in town, might join go to the Patrica Barber show in A2, but, I frequently travel on business.

Cheers,

Frank
