Pre-amp at its most basic

I was exchanging pm's with another circle member as to the various functions of a pre-amp. The following link shows a pre-amp at its most basic--just a pair of RCA inputs wired to two mono volume controls wired to a pair of output RCA jacks. Would work with just one input and give volume control and balance. I tried to explain this, but sometimes the picture is worth more.

How's this for basic: A silver bullet plug with two resistors, some wire and a copper jack.
I used a series 22K and a parallel 2.0K ohm for my listening volume. Your resistors may be different - just increase the 22K for lower volume.
