Any/Many John Fogerty/CCR Fans Around Here?

I've moved on to a lot of female folk/bluegrass and religious music, but still a soft spot for CCR and the reclusive John Fogerty who pops up with an album every eight or ten years. I think that it's hard to beat the perfection of the great classic three-minute CCR songs, and they still sound pretty fresh today. I guess they were mixed to sound the most magical on cheap transistor radios, much more common during the time of Creedence, the late sixties, early 70's.

If you are a John Fogerty fan, do you think he still needs the original Creedence to be at his best- in other words has he been as significant since CCR broke up?- and have you been to any of his concerts last year? What is your opinion of his latest album, DejaVu All Over Again and do you feel like me that the popular press has given him short shrift throughout his career in favor of more "flashy" flavor-of-the-month stars?

I thought his Centerfield album in the 1980's was very good

My preference is with CCR, but that may be because of my age and the fact that I listened to CCR in my formative years.  I do like Centerfield and Deja Vu, just not as much as CCR.

Wouldn't spend a dime to see the current CCR shows without John

Everytime I hear CCR I'm amazed at how timeless the music is to me. I've moved on from much of the music I listened to growing up, but not CCR. They had something... something really good there that crossed a lot of styles.

I tried, but just can't get into Fogerty by himself. It just doesn't have the depth or magic of CCR to me.

I have the Fantasy Records versions of the first with Suzy Q and Green River and am very pleased with the quality of both.

I've read similar things regarding the Greatest Hits (Chronicles) collection, but it was in regards to the SACD (I believe) version (typically available from Japan or China - I'm guessing this ISN'T a Fantasy Release).  I almost bought it, but was swayed by the negative reviews I've seen.  I haven't got any of the Fantasy Remasters yet.

I enjoy Deja Vu - there are guitars EVERYWHERE.  Really cool.  My only complaint would be some of the lyrics aren't as strong or as timeless as some of his older material (maybe they'll grow on me though).

Might be worth mentioning that I totally enjoy the John Fogarty Premonition DVD.  Really good performances of CCR and solo stuff and a really good Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.  Anyone have this?

Has anyone attended one of John's live concerts last year? In March he plays in Europe.

I enjoyed the "Live By Request" from New Jersey on A&E a lot! I thought the sonics were pretty good considering it was TV, and he played a good mix of things through his career to date. He was extremely gracious in dedicating a song both to a lady caller and in memory of her mother who had passed away.

It seemed he was really "loose" and having a great time on the Season Opener for Austin City Limits, but my feeling was that the playing was SO energized it was a touch "sloppy" or maybe just too "rushed" sounding which is unusual for Fogerty who usually is razor sharp on stage. Maybe he was having TOO much fun? I'm not complaining, though!

I love CCR! A bit off topic, but I haven't had any success getting any sort of response out of Fantasy Jazz. They don' provide a phone number, only an e-mail address, and they don't seem to answer e-mails. Are they reliable to order from?

Personally, I think it doesn't stand on its own so much as fill in a legendary career, and go off in some new directions.

It's much more "country" than any of his earlier work except for his solo project in 1973 under the name "The Blue Ridge Rangers."

I don't think there's a real bad song on the entire album but then no real "hits" either. His anti-war song, the title track, and "Nobody Here Anymore" are the only social commentary songs, which is a little strange for John.

Probably only two songs, the title track and Wicked Old Witch, will remind you of CCR.

This time, I think most of the lyrics are weak and his voice isn't at peak, but the musicality is first rate. Somebody else here noted a lot of great guitar work. He has a couple of top notch guest musicians this time, too.
Recording quality seems fair, with the worst quality probably being the title track, ironically enough.

I understand that was a later addition to the album.

So...if you are a dyed-in-the-wool CCR/Fogerty fan as I am, keep it, but we're in bushwhacked economic times, so if you feel your money could be spent better by returning it, that's understandable too.

I hope that helped.

Have you listened to Acoustic Sounds' SACD remastering?  Sounds very good.

TIC,

Did you decide to keep or return the Fogerty "DejaVu All Over Again" CD? If you kept it, what did you think of it?

Just "bumping" this up to let you know that a pretty comprehensive article about the career of Creedence Clearwater Revival has been published in an English hi-fi magazine (a fine one) called Hi-Fi+.

It's issue 37 and should be on newsstands now, try Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. Due to our bushwhacked economy and the dollar hardly being worth the paper it's printed on, the single-copy price is (GULP) $10.99!

Five pages devoted to a review of the career reissue of Creedence is the most ink I've seen devoted to them in many years- even if they managed to mis-spell the band's name on both the cover and contents page.

I like both of John Fogerty's last two CDs.  I like the new one a lot, and listen to it more than CCR (actually much, much more than CCR because CCR has been so overplayed).  As for writing, this is hard to tell, as I never really thought of CCR or John Fogerty as being a lyricist ("Heard it through the grapevine" -- what's lyrical about that?  Compare that to Green Day's new CD; or anything by Dylan or Neil Young).  I like every song on the new CD and particularly like "Sugar Sugar."

Bob,

I think that John's writing has at times been quite sharp and "politically oriented" as in "Fortunate Son" but I don't think he can be compared to the "poetry" and more complicated lyrics of Bob Dylan. It's all "fruit" but really like comparing apples and oranges.

Although the album wasn't very well accepted, I think his writing was quite articulate -if dark- in several songs of EYE OF THE ZOMBIE in 1986.

Did Fogerty write "Grapevine?" You could be correct but I thought someone else wrote it and Fogerty "covered" it.

It is interesting that you particularly like "Sugar, Sugar" from the latest album because a musician from Wisconsin phoned in last year during A&E's "Live by Request with John Fogerty" and told John direct that was his favorite song.

It's one of my three favorites, the others being "I Will Walk With You" and "Nobody Here Anymore."

Thanks for your input.

Jerry
