There has never been a better time to get into audio. Unfortunately for many of us the bricks and mortar storefronts have largely gone away, but the internet has filled in quite nicely by providing access to finding local clubs, a myriad of professional reviews, and of course sites like this. And the price for admission into true high fidelity sound has never been lower or more convenient. Plus the ability to use your computer as your music source helps greatly.
Newbies need to know what music they prefer, learn the audio lingo, and discover what audio attributes they most value. Next take your favorite music to a shop, show, or club and find out what speakers are preferred. Hopefully you have the budget and a room (dedicated is ideal) to accommodate those speakers. Pick power amps to serve those speakers and preamps to meet your needs (sources, convenience). And note that digital sources (DACs and possible dedicated servers) are changing quickly so invest carefully.
