Hello from France
« on: 26 Mar 2018, 02:14 pm »
Hello to all,

I was registred here for years (?), but didn't post since my english is not very good, and maybe had nothing very interesting to report :green:

I own an active speakers sytem (mains + subwoofers) with German/american stuff : Geithain RL940 speakers, SVS SB2000 subs, to a PSaudio DS Jr Dac, then a small pro psychoacoustic and very valuable thing (SPL Vitalizer, with...tubes), + an old passive preamp (Promitheus Reference, it was the reason I read this forum first) and soon an active handcrafted tube crossover/buffer. All is streamed from My modded Mac Mini (with Mojo Audio Illuminati PSU) with roon+tidal.

I'd like to change my preamp for a new passive one, certainly a Tortuga (or other). Merrill and EAR would also be nice, but I'm not sure I can spend so much money for a such small thing  :green:

Active tube crossover - that will be very nice!!  Couldn't you just put a volume pot on your crossover and use it as your preamp?  Might sound better that way.

And welcome to AC :)

Thank you all !

...The crossover will have 2 attenuation pots : 1 for the subs, 1 for the mains. 12dB slope, adjustable  from 50 to 90Hz. It may be perfect for my needs, but I tried a few days ago to connect directly from my Dac to the speakers, and the difference was quite enormous (much much better with a preamp, active or passive). So I think a good preamp can still add something very valuable. In my case, it was the soundstage : totally narrowed when direct connection to the Dac, very large and deep with lots or air with a preamp (I directly compared vs my Promitheus reference and a Parasound P7).

Active speakers - yeah!

I run AlNiCo single driver speakers (by definition active) and active studio monitors (Dynaudio BM5 MkIII) with a powered (active) sub via a DSPeaker Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core DAC/preamp/bass DSP and am well satisfied.  Have tried tubes in the past (looking for a touch of the magic) but have been disappointed each time (I like simple/compact/easy to live with gear).
