Interesting theory--Dogme 95
« on: 2 Jan 2005, 12:32 pm »
Browsing Netflix, I added Lars Von Trier's "Breaking the Waves" to my queue, but  the description of the movie included a term I'd never heard/seen before--- Dogme 95 school of film-making.
I found the philosophy very interesting and a refreshing change to the grandiose, special effects movies.  The directors obviously take themselves seriously since their site includes a "Manifesto" containing a "Vow of Chastity."  One probably wouldn't want an exclusive diet of these films and there seem to only be a handful of them anyway , but it might be worth exploring for the adventurous.

I read the FAQ and it does sound interesting. Let us know how Breaking the Waves is, the rest may be worth looking into!

I've seen "Breaking the Waves " twice already and have grown to love it.
The first time was in a theater: I recognized the concept von Trier was using and appreciated Emily Watson's performance, but wasn't sure exactly whether I liked it or not.  The second time I saw it was on cable and I didn't have to think so much--I really liked it the second go-round.

It's been several years, so I think I might benefit from seeing it again.

Dogme 95 films are quite interesting, i own a few of them... but some of them are not as good as i would have hoped. The Celebration (Festen) is especially good... I really liked Breaking the waves too! Nice to see some fans of off-beat foreign cinema here :)
