I had one of these turntables, a Sony PS 5520 in the 80's. Got it second hand for £25 and it was literally a £1 per lb because it's a wonderful lump of engineering.
Put it on auto and the gears creak and groan as it moves the arm across but the sound is worth the wait.
This was apparently Sony's attempt at "high end" and it comes a close second to a Rega Planar 2, not really high end but still a good sound.
It is definitely an analogue sound compared to the Rega which was analytical and precise, but there was never any chance of it becoming tiring to listen to.
It really is as much a physical experience as a listening one, and I regret letting mine go for £20 in the late 90's.
