Digital Projector setup question
« on: 24 Dec 2004, 05:35 pm »
For those who use a digital projector for their DVD viewing, doesn't this approach inherently bring about a cabling problem. That is, your DVD player is usually positioned up front near the screen/amp/speakers etc. But the projector is anywhere from 10 to 20 feet away from the above. Therefore you have to have a cable (video cable) which is at least that long running from the front to the back of the room.

Is there any common knowledge about how to handle this and what kinds of costs are involved in this kind of cabling at those lengths relative to quality issues in the picture due to long cables?

Thanks (and while you're at it, Panny AE700 or Sanyo Z3 ??)

Hi,
I have a front projector L300U. Generally you have a choice of putting the DVD player close to the projector with short video cable and long audio to the speakers & receiver (which are usually on the front of the room under/beside the screen), OR have the DVD player close to the receiver & speakers with short audio cables and long video cables over to the projector. Since I want to use a DVI video connection I placed my DVD player under the projector, because long DVI cables are very expensive, and can have problems. This allows a single digital coax (SPDIF) audio cable to the receiver from the DVD player, and then I have short speaker cables. If you don't plan to use DVI, long component cables are good and reasonably priced, but the way I saw it was I could pay for 1 long audio digital coax, or for 3 long video component cables, and I prefer a short DVI. The audio sounds great. I bought Blue Jeans cables and they sound great.

I use a 25' run of S-Vid and a 25' set of component cables.  The components were purchased from Pacific Cables, and I can't see any diff between them and the 1 meter pair I had been using.  I don't remember what brand the S-vid is (I only use it to connect the VCR).

I've got the dvd player under the screen but thinking about it I'd put it closer to the projector and use optical digital to the receiver.  You can get very thin optical cables which are a whole lot easier to route than any component or s-video cables and they won't pick up any interference

My DVD is under my screen with a 20' component run to a ceiling mounted PJ.  Zu Cable has or will build you nice cables for long runs at a reasonable price.  They often run auctions on ebay where you can get fantastic deals.
