Hello from cold, dark North East Scotland
« on: 23 Dec 2017, 01:04 pm »
Hi all,

I stumbled across this place when following some links on the Benchmark DAC3L which I was researching.

I've been in the Naim camp for many years and even shipped all my stuff to the US when I moved there in 1997 (Cleveland initially and then Chicago although it seems I spent my life in airports and hotels across the country!) and had all the voltage changed from 220/240 to 110/120 and then I did the reverse when I moved back to the UK in 2008!  In recent times I've moved away from Naim and pride of place in my main system is a pair of ATC SCM40A speakers (these are active for those not familiar with ATC naming conventions and looking for a DAC/PreAmp to connect to my Auralic Aries Mini and to replace the Naim UnitiQute that is doing pre-amp duties currently.

In my home office, I have an LP12 with Dynavector P75 Phono preamp, into a totally refurbished 40 year old Marantz 2285B Receiver, with digital duties coming from the iMac I'm typing this on via USB out into a Gustard USB re-clocker and on to the Marantz via an old Beresford DAC I had lying around.

So, hello from Aberdeen in NE Scotland, which is about the same latitude as Halifax Nova Scotia!

Slàinte mhath (to use the Gaelic)

Welcome indeed Jim!

From one cold place to another, I am writing from Fredericton, New Brunswick. It is -15C and we are expecting 15mm of freezing rain over the next 24 hours. Should be interesting. We have plenty of firewood, food and beer, so I say bring it on!

Sound like quite an adventure bringing your gear across the pond, and converting and reconverting the power supplies. The things us audiophiles will do. I recently moved from the west coast, in British Columbia, back home to NB - and hauled my gear along with us. We only had a 12 foot trailor and I'd say 25% of it was occupied by boxes and boxes of audio related gear! Thankfully, after 9 days of driving and 5,600km's later, all components survived the trip safety.

Those ATC active speakers look lovely, and your setup must have nice and clean appearance. Got pics? :)

I'm running an all-Bryson setup....MiniT speakers, 4BSST2 amp, BP-20DA preamp, BDA2 dac, BDP-1 digital player and BIT20 power conditioner. Often times, I will switch out the Bryston MiniT speakers for PMC Twenty 22's. Oh yea, and for added low extension, i'm running a REL328 sub.

Prior to using Bryston's BDA2 DAC, I was using the internal DAC in the pre-amp, and before that a Marantz pre-amp/DAC.

I have to say the BDA2 DAC blew me away the moment I plugged it in and hit play.   Super clean and transparent. The DAC has a ton of input options - including balanced in/outputs.  Bryston introduced a new BDA3 recently with HDMI options. If HDMI is not required, the BDA2 provides the same sonic signature as the 3 without the added costs. (IMO).  I believe PMC is the EU Bryston distributor, but i'm not entirely sure on that.

Anyway, as you can see, I'm a huge Bryston fan - and i bet their DAC (and preamps) would sound amazing with your speakers.

Your home office setup sounds really cool!  :thumb:

ps. i've been lucky enough to visit Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews back in 2008. Gotta get back there someday!

Hello and welcome to AC, Jim!  Hope the exile isn't permanent.  I am a fan of PMC speakers (EB1i) and am always looking for the opportunity to hear some ATC's. Rare here in the US.
