What do you have in mind for a replacement DAC?

It’s roundabout. I have an Oppo 203 feeding the DS to a TV and active speakers and wanted to upgrade its audio. However, the new 203 VanityHD audio card turned out to be a mixed blessing - fabulous sound effects (clarity, staging, dynamics, delicacy, etc.) that take the 203 up a couple of levels, but tonally off and not emotionally engaging (a bit digital sounding). That leaves what to do to improve the 203. The choices are not as appealing as the Vanity card. The mod choices are better for an Oppo 205, in particular the ModWright one, which allows combining player and dac in an overall superior unit (although that means having to deal with tube rolling and overhead, along with their heat in the summer). So I wasn’t planning on selling the dac, seeing it as a long-term investment with its firmware upgrades and its simplicity in feeding active speakers, but here I am.
