nad cd player not tracking?
« on: 19 Dec 2004, 12:59 am »
First of all i have a problem with my nad 521i cd player.  What happens is when i load in a cd it starts off fine and then it seems to get stuck anywere from 30-50 seconds. If I try to skip ahead to the next track it makes werid nosie and won't play anything, seems like the tracking is stuck. I'v tryed at least 10 different disks  same problem every time grr its fustrating.   Anyway   what do you guys think is wrong with it?

Is this a new CD player or one you've had that suddenly developed the problem?

i'v owned this player for just over a year and a half with no problems at all.  I turned it on today and thats what happened.  I am wondering if something is just stuck or broken.

You could call the manufacturer and describe the problem.

If the disc always acts up about the same place, it may have something to do with the laser alignment, but that's just a guess. The laser itself must be OK or it wouldn't play at all.

Be sure the player is sitting completely level where installed.

Sometimes, I open the CD drawer with no disc loaded, and gently but steadily blow into the opening into the inside of the player with my mouth...be sure your mouth is completely clean with no saliva, food particles, etc. you want only a stream of air. It's never hurt any CD player I've owned but try that at your own risk. The idea being that a gentle but steady ten or fifteen seconds of air might dislodge some dust...

Truth is my best advice was probably at the beginning.

Good luck,
Jerry

Way back my first CD player started mistracking after a few years and I decided it was the plastic drive parts telling me it was time to upgrade.  (My next player was a NAD.)

Possibly the rails that the servo/laser assy. ride on need lubricating. Could be it's getting stuck on the rails @ that spot.

Thanks, Mark C, that's the idea I was trying to convey to him but didn't have the right terminology...

Hi Thom,

The reasons for the problem you described could be many. I would check the laser pickup ref. voltage, usually around 2.5V DC. I am not familiar with this CD player, but had same problems before with other ones. There's also +5V DC voltage going to the laser pickup. Sometimes the reference voltage fluctuates a bit (or gets noise - induced by other ICs).

Further, you should check "RF" test point on the PCB for proper amplitude of the eye pattern waveform. It should be around 1.8V PP. Less than 1.6V and you’ll might get trouble with low reflectivity disks. However, I think the problem’s in reference voltage feeding the laser pickup.

It is unlikely that the problem is mechanical, unless you get the problem always at the same "spot" (distance from the centre of the disk) with all the different CDs.
