modulus-286 vs Sympatico vs QRP-02
« on: 1 Oct 2017, 05:54 am »
Hello this is my first message on this forum !
My name is Hermen and I live in the Netherlands in a city called Rotterdam.

I am planning to build a amplifier based on a LM3886 or LM4780 design.
During my quest to find a nice design for a DIY amp, three designs did grab my attention.

The Modulus-286, QRP-02 and Sympatico.

Did anyone did a back-to-back comparisson between these designs?
Or does anyone have experience with these designs?

Hope to hear from you!

Welcome, a buddy of mine built the Modulus and then sold off his Ncore. Maybe he will chime in?

I use Mod-86 now, but I also have Sympatico. I have Par-86 but not built it yet.

The Mod-86 family are well engineered amps. They all sound the same because they all use the same design and parts except for the output stage which has minor influence on the overall sound. Mod86 is very detailed, communicative, tone monster, great damping. The first time you hear it you will say "wow!" By itself it sounds dry and precise. Not "etched" like with excess treble, or sizzling treble from distortion, but just perfectly clear, transparent, wire with gain. Not many amps at any price are as detailed. Some people prefer to sweeten it a little with magnetics or tubes upstream. I like the sweetnin too, but I still prefer naked Mod86 on acoustic music so I can hear the extreme inner tonal detail. There's nothing like it. I've never heard any amp that digs so deep on tone as Mod86.

Sympatico has a fuller, warmer sound, less detailed, bigger bottom. Sounds "big." Sounds like normal good quality mid-fi amp, with big warm happy personality. It has built-in power supply. LM4870 chip is discontinued, so make sure you can get those before you buy the kit. My Sympaticos are for sale. PM.

I've not heard the other amp you mentioned.
Good luck with your decision, and welcome to AudioCircle!!

Thank you to all for the response to my first message!  :D

@Rich, my goal is as much detail as possible and instruments that are spatially displayed in the sound image.
Looks like Neurochrome is the way to go. However, PCBs are expensive.

@Folsom, do you have some info on your PCB project?

Just ordered a Modulus-286 with the Power-86 power supply.
I will be posting updates on the building proces.

I look forward to your build thread. My building an amp intimidates me to no end. I hope you will post your impressions once the finished amplifier has settled in.

Thank you.

These boards with lots of SMD parts aren't for the faint of heart.  :o

I'm thinking of buying a Modushop housing.
However, I do not see any thermal values on the website.
Anyone familiar with this info?

Hi Nenreh:

Check out the below thread where a forum member has listed which chassis he selected for his modulus 286 build...

I've built amps with the LM3875, which is very similar to the LM3886.

Never gets very hot, I'm sure that chassis has way more then enough cooling for a 3886.
