6P3P AMP KIT
« on: 28 Sep 2017, 06:56 am »
New to this type of thing. Have bought my first valve amp kit (6P3P Kit).
Hoping to learn from people in the know and posting my successes as well as my failures for a laugh of course.
Never built anything without a circuit board so this should be interesting if not embarrassing.
Any feedback good or bad is welcome I don't offend easily.

Hi Welcome aboard :thumb:
Dont know if your goal are spend little or wish spend more for sound quality.
Any way my view is>
Teflon hard wire is best sound, stranded wire are easy to solder.
Lead solder is cheap, no lead silver solder is better sound.
Ceramic soquets are cheap, Teflon sockets are best sound.
Triode is best sound, UL delivery more Watts.

Thanks FullRangerMan,

Didn't know any of that and will look at making the changes when the kit is together.

This is my .02 on solder, take it or leave it

One of the best solders for DIYer's is Cardas Quad Eutectic.  It is a proprietary mix of Lead, Tin, Silver, and Gold.  Works great!

Silver solders are usually very hard to work with with proper wetting being the most difficult aspect.  One downside to lead free solder is tin whiskers.  Read this:

http://www.militaryaerospace.com/articles/print/volume-16/issue-10/news/trends/lead-free-solder-a-train-wreck-in-the-making.html

Again, my opinion.

WBT have or had a solder w/tin, lead and silver.
Usually silver solder are harder to melt and more prone to broken than lead, copper, tin.
