Magic Eraser Re-visited

Was using, sponge, dish soap, hot water.
Magic Eraser, dish soap, hot water does a better job.

Magic eraser doesn't seem to do any damage to the vinyl and gets rid of all the nasty's.

My inexpensive cleaning system that does a good job. Afterwards hit it with a zerostat if needed and your good to go.

Have used Magic Erasure as a stylus cleaner, VERY gently, works great.  Never considered using as a vinyl cleaner, but then I have a Nitty Gritty vacuum cleaner.

I tried magic eraser on the records and found that it left light abrasion marks. I have been using one of the cheap steam cleaners and it works great. Magic eraser does seem to work on the stylus.

I've heard of Magic Eraser used for stylus cleaning as well. I saw a couple of different ones while I was waiting at the local ACE Hardware last weekend and almost picked one up. Then I couldn't remember which one you are supposed to use.....seem to remember it was blue in color. Have to do a search and see which it is.

Never heard of it used on vinyl either. I would worry about damage.

I believe for stylus cleaning, you just lower the stylus slowly and gently onto the Magic Eraser and raise it straight back up until it is free of any dust.

I can't imagine doing the same thing on vinyl - it wouldn't get down into the grooves. I'd be afraid to press, mush less swipe it across the surface.

I'm not a vinyl guy, but it's worth noting that there's nothing magic about Magic Eraser and it's ilk.

It's melamine foam which works like a very fine abrasive. This is conjecture on my part, but while dabbing a hard stylus is probably not going to damage it,  rubbing it against anything softer than the abrasive itself is likely to scratch and I'm pretty sure that would include vinyl.

Magic Erasers were originally designed as an acoustic foam.

I have used it on my wall to get off a stubborn stain. It was a white wall. After, I looked at the spot and I could see it took some shine out of the paint. I dont think I will use it again on a wall, to abrasive. I would not use it on my vinyl.

Now that I think about it and looked closely at the 2 LP's I tried maybe it's not a good idea after all. Hopefully I'm allowed one mistake on AC.

Probably no longer playable, but at least they're clean! No dirt and no unnecessary grooves! Magically erased! :green:
