sonyphile here...

Just came across this forum and wanted to join.  I'm working my way towards collecting an original 60s Sony ES system, but like to collect other classic japanese hifi stuff too.  I occasionally listen to music too :)

Greetings & Welcome to AC doomlord_uk  :thumb:  It's good you're putting those vintage pieces to work playing music. Granted they are nice eye-candy, but better when doing what they were designed for.   8)

I'm working my way towards collecting an original 60s Sony ES system...

I thought the ES line debuted in the late eighties / early nineties. In the mid seventies I worked at my uncle's shop and one of the lines we carried was Sony. We pretty much carried the complete line, and I don't recall any of it having the ES designation. If some of it did, then it didn't register in my 15 year old mind.

Did the EL Cassettes fall into that bracket? They weren't exactly popular, but I own one for a short while.

I always wanted a rack of Sony SuperScope gear

I liked the purple lights and general design.
By the 70s the SuperScope line was separate from Sony so I guess I'm off topic.

When I read your post I recalled Superscope being affiliated with Marantz, so I did some checking... Found that it was initially under Sony, then they acquired Marantz and their later products during their peak were under Marantz. Interesting history here: http://www.superscopetechnologies.com/t-about.aspx

According to the vintage knob website the Sony ES line originated in the fall of 1965 and I remember it from the early 70s as their best offering in top of the line gear. Good looking design.
