Need help finding a sub
« on: 24 Aug 2017, 09:07 pm »
Hi all I'm looking for a thickener to go with my focal 1027BE.  Though incredible they do lack the bottom end I'm looking for.  I listen to 99% heavy metal FYI.  (Pete lol). Any suggestions I want the sub to work in harmony with my speakers but with some authority without taking away from the middle.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

I like REL. Much depends on room config, tuning, and physical positioning, since they need to lock on to the room to fill it with vibes.

Good luck.

My room is a rectangle 25X13 the speakers are on the 25 foot wall and I'm about 7-8 feet back from my speakers

Do you have a budget?  If so, SVS has a great sub around $599.00.  They have a variety but the $599.00 sub was selected several times in a hi fi mag to their reviewers.  I can't remember which, maybe Home Theater Review.

On a higher end, and, for more music with no HT, it's hard to beat JL Audio.

Hey, I know TEKTON is not well known for being of "high end"..
But my Cinema Sub has impressed me over and over..$1,000 each..
(With very low notes, ability to produce Bass guitar, and kick drum with realism, and blends pretty well)

The only thing I can complain about is I wish I had 2 woofers,
So that the entire stage , left to right is balanced with the same low frequencies throughout...

I can't fit (2) 18" Woofers in my listening room ..( WAF )
I would've been better off with (2) of his 12" woofers $750 each..
Or (2). of his new  10" woofers. $600 each..
You will have a hard time getting better sound , for  the  same price $1200-$1500 delivered for a pair of sub woofers...

I have no experience with , but I have a VERY strong feeling about Daedalus Audio and any of there products,,
The subs look to be of very high quality , they are not Cheap,  and you need to power them extra $ ..

Hey ,I'm still in my first season of experiencing "higher end" audio, and I am in the lower " financial bracket" ,
So most important to me is to get the best piece I can afford,  One piece at a time...
I have been having good luck with smaller (1) or (2) man companies, TEKTON speakers and ODYSSEY amps,
Very decent quality products from people who want to share , their products with you for a reasonable price..

I've heard good things about HSU Research subwoofers.  Factory direct pricing.

for $599 I'll be looking in this direction.  I've had good luck with REL in the past as well.  I'd be willing to go up to $1000

I have a SVS PC13 Ultra, used in my HT set up, I can't remember now how many years I've had it but it has worked great with no issues.  It was easy to integrate and plays very deep.  The $599 box sub should be good as well.  They have a new 16" sub that's supposed to be incredible.  Mine pressurizes my 14x22 room as is, I can't imagine a larger one.

Keep in mind not much Metal has deep bass.  If your system is fairly neutral, meaning not adding to the recording, that could account for what you perceive is a lack of bass.  Not many systems at home will pound your chest with a double kick like the live show.

A couple test tracks if you have them, Stabbing Westward, "Save Yourself" (I think that's the name); there's a track on Godsmack's album with "I Stand Alone", forget which track has the deep bass.  Three Days Grace with Chalk Outline is recorded pretty well, that track invites to play loud :)  I don't have a lot of their albums but I'd say Dream Theater would have some bass.

Most of the kick drum is nearly lower midrange depending on who it is.

Never hurts to fill in that bottom, just something to consider.

I would look at Rythmik subs.  Their prices have gone up but you won't find better for the price.  Take a look at their F12, better yet, the F12se

This may not be as true for heavy metal, but IME the biggest factor in satisfaction from a sub is integrating it properly, so you can't tell when it's playing rather than the mains. A sub with as many adjustments as possible will help. Ideally, a crossover with both high-pass (for the mains) and low-pass (for the subs) is the ticket. Second best is a sub with a lot of adjustments.

I have two JL Audio F112 and like them a lot. They are clean and integrate well. The V2 versions have a much better EQ system, I'm told. Whatever you get, spend some time getting it adjusted, and have fun!

2 or more Subs are always better to avoid standing waves in the room.
2 smaller can sound better than one big.

I would agree, except for "always".  My opinion is, it depends on the room.

I was gonna make a joke about googling 'delicatessen' but decided that wouldn't be helpful...
