Going to list some gear to sell on audiogon and some gear will go for $5000.

Is it better to pay transaction fee of $100 when I list, or only if I sell that same $100 fee is $175.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Does Free Audiomart have a lot of buyers or no where close to the Gon?

In my experience Audiogon has the most exposure of any of the used audio sites but it comes at a cost. I've had good luck selling gear with no fees either here on the Audio Circle 'Trading Post' or US Audiomart but you have to be patient. Usually results are quicker on AG but there seem to be more scammers there as well which you have to watch out and suitably screen against. I like to talk to potential buyers before agreeing to a deal and find that it allows me to be more secure about who I'm dealing with, and most scammers won't agree to phone contact. So if you're not in a rush I'd suggest giving it a shot on the free sites and only if you have no luck then going onto AG. Good luck and hope this helps!

Welcome Stump I suppose the transaction fee you mention in the Paypal fee, our Trade Circle is free of charge.
Best place to sell is where there is a buyer to your product.
Give preference to Paypal and charge the according paypal fee.
Also you can pay the paypal fee yourself to be another selling point.

I usually start with the forum classifieds, if it doesn't sell in a week or two then I move on to Audiogon.  Priced at or just a little below market value and you'll sell in a day or two. 

Just know what market value is on your item.   I've also sold items on Facebook Group dedicated to the brand of the item I'm selling.

I see much used gear at 50% off new price.

Is that a good place to be?

For expensive gear, noplace else is a good or as fast as Audiogon.
The question of the cost..
My feeling is: If you price you item high, then go for the pay after sell.
If your price is low, and the item is certain to sell in a few days.. Go for the upfront cost.
Overpriced stuff just does not sell. So you need to know what stuff LIKE yours is selling for.
Guessing does not work.
Some brands and particular items sell for a LOT, (80% of new or better) and sell immediately.
Other items are dogs and sell for 20% of list at best. IF you can find a buyer.
My suggestion  is sell on free sites if you are not familiar with Audiogon. And do not know what is a good fair price.

Personally I'd take the "sold" for $175 vs the "listing" for $100.

The reason is simple ... my goal is to sell the gear, not list the gear.

Depends on what it is and what you want. I sold a lot gear, but never once have I ever used audiogon. I have on more than one occasion sold expensive gear within a few days of posting the ad through local market websites - that is not through Craigslist or Kijiji - for upto 70% of its original value.

I should add one of the most important benefits of selling local is both parties are far less likely to get scammed or screwed. You get paid in cash, and the owner gets to try before he buys in a hassle free, no bullshit transaction.

Listed an amp on USAudiomart today and it already sold. Listed a pair of speakers on USAM a couple weeks ago and they sold next day. Audiogon is my last resort nowadays.

Note that I'm not selling $5k items, only $1k.

Check Ebay for older Sunfire amps and JBL speakers, a lot of them are selling for the same price (or more) than they were brand new.

As a general rule DAC's and HT processors drop in value more quickly because digital evolves so quickly. Speakers and amps less so.

Hi stump, welcome to AC and yes summer is typically a bad time to hustle audio gear,
BUT...
There are of course exceptions like something rare or of special vintage even.  I will agree with Elizabeth in that above a certain price Audiogon is the preferred venue.  Next is USAudioMart or CanuckAudioMart and then the forums and Craigslist.  Just speaking from experience.
