Putting together a moderately price system
« on: 31 May 2017, 04:16 am »
New to A/c and looking for some advice. I recently purchased a Prima Luna Prologue premium integrated amp. I am running it through a pair of new Magnepan MMG's.  I'm looking to bump it up a bit and was thinking of returning the Maggies for the Magnepan 1.7's. I have the following questions:

1) Is their a better choice in the $1500 to $2000 range.

2) Would a preamp improve the sound Prima Luna

3)  Any suggestions for tweaking this system to add a little more warmth to the sound.

Thanks in advance!

I think your speakers and amp are fine for the job. If you move up to the 1.7, you may need to upgrade the amp as well. The 1.7 require more power to reach their potential. What are you currently using as your source?

As for better choices can you visit a local dealer to audition some gear?
As for tweaks ask Herbie about isoloation devices in his circle and dave at Zenwave circle about cables. Their is also a circle hear for room treatments. If you need more bass maybe think about a sub.

With Maggies (whether or not they will work in your room is a whole other question) you don't have the expensive of the most expensive part of the manufacturing of a speaker - the box.  You may be able to find better values used online (I helped a friend many years ago getting used MMGs with upgraded stand - e.g. https://www.audiogon.com/listings?utf8=%E2%9C%93&global_search_text=magnepan).

Hi, I own both the MMG's and 1.6's.  The 1.7's will be a huge step up from the MMG's but they will need more power to sound their best.  As you go up in power and current, the dynamics drastically improve.  You may want to consider going up in power before upgrading the speakers. If you listen at low volumes, then take you integrated amp to the store and give a listen to the 1.7's to see how they sound and how loud they play.
