Welcome!
In my opinion it's always best to start system building with the speaker. Keep in mind the room/setup in which it will be used, your tastes, the musical genres they would mostly be used with, and of course your budget. The most frequent "mistakes" I see in speaker selection are buying too much speaker for a given room, having the power/integrated amp before shopping for speakers, and not taking the time necessary to get past first impressions when auditioning.
Read up, but then you must audition (again take your time). Bring a good selection of your favorite music, take notes (to force you to really listen and aural memory is fleeting), and limit yourself to a handful of speakers to listen seriously to per day (the brain fatigues). Have fun with the hunt. Attending shows is a good way to veto speakers but show conditions rarely allow for really hear (and again the brain fatigue kicks in big time).
