BEST DAC (here we go again)

The $250 Scott Nixon DACkit is a virtual clone of the 47 Labs 4716 DAC which is a $1500 piece. Not a rip-off, the 47 Lab design notes were always public domain. This is one sweet sounding approach to Redbook.

Monarchy Audio 22B or 22C + DIP

I know this is not one of the trendy new favorites like the Benchmark DAC.  Hell it is only a "20bit" DAC but it is using what is arguably still one of the very DACs ever made, the Burr Brown PCM63K (true 20bit ladder type not the rehased 1bit/24bit delta sigmas and much more expensive)along with the very nice Burr Brown DF1700 8x oversampling digital filter.  As long as you want a DAC for straight ahead cd replay (no DSD or DVD-A) then for the money (about $1200 for the 22B + $300 for a DIP) it is really tough to beat.  Used they can be found for around (when they can be found) $500 + $150 or so for the DIP.  They use transimpedance amps for the I to V conversion and a GIC filter in the output so there is no phase shift.  Coupled with a DIP they are truly playing in the big leagues for redbook cd.  The 22C even comes with a nice linestage built in (although I prefer tubes in my amplifiers).

For a step higher than this then I would get a used Mark Levinson 360 DAC.  This is a seriously good machine that can be had for about $2500 or so used.  I think it doesn't really get much better for redbook cd.

I recommend the Dodson DAC-263. There is a good review of itin Bound for Sound. I own it and have had good results so far

Well I'd love to build a couple just really to be able to do some R&D with different power supplies, etc.  The Lynx card's designer seems to think that transformer coupling would limit frequency response of the card, even though it helps with common mode rejection.  They do have a new product out that has better specs than the LynxTWO, but it's $2200.  And the specs are barely better.

M-Audio SuperDAC 2496 is only about £150 now.  It is made for the music industry.  A much bigger market place than stereo hi-fi. Economies of scale that mass production brings keeps the price down to levels hi-fi industry can only dream of.  If it is a ‘hi-fi product’ sold though the hi-fi trade with its big margins, it will have a 'hi-fi price tag' of at least double.
