Greetings from the tropics
« on: 2 Feb 2017, 08:06 am »
Hi folks & mods,

I'm a long-time dormant hifi enthusiast and only started getting decent gear last year. Before this I've been more of a headfi guy and got into the habit about 4 years ago.

I grew up in a house that I shared with the legendary Polk Audio SRS 1.2 TLs driven by Carver 1000W monoblocks. It was a magical time, I regularly had orchestra symphonies blaring away and rock concerts rocking the house at insanely high dBs - walls of sound with 17" passive subwoofer propelled bass, 8 woofer midrange and 4 titanium domed tweeters per side.

One I struck it out on my own, I was only going to spend on computers first and so it is only 20 years later that I dare to delve into the money sucking black hole that is hifi, having already been dragged into the headfi black hole.

But I'm here now and working on my hifi setup with a pair of fantastic Elac UB5, powered by an Onkyo A-9010 or an Audio-gd Precision 1 - fed by an Audio-gd DAC-19. It is quite good, if I say so myself but I've heard what's out there and hopefully will get to my personal hifi nirvana at some point.

I'm almost there with my headfi setup - Audeze LCD 3 driven by Cayin IHA-6 and fed by the Audio-gd DAC-19 too.

Cheers!

Welcome exsomnis!  Curious, where in the tropics?

On a side note it seems the membership is growing nicely of late so welcome to all newcomers!

Welcome to AC!

Hard to match (with speakers in a room) the performance of those Audeze LCD3! But cans are a good reference when building a speaker system.

Nice system you got there.

I know right? My stereo setup has been lagging behind my cans since day one - and in terms of resolution, definition and clarity, they still are. But yes, it does give me a reference point that way. It probably doesn't do me any good that I've actually heard systems that give them a run for their money because they were insanely expensive...and insanity in hifi is relative ;)

Welcome to the fun!

I, myself, am from the land below the wind, but I live in Kuala Lumpur.

Welcome!

Polk in their prime, I think. I wonder what happened since then, should probably do a bit of research on that.

An audio buddy has reconditioned 3 pairs of SDS speakers (each different models including the 1.2 TL) and loves the wide dispersion in his wide but shallow listening space.  The cross-channel scheme was popular among a few manufacturers in the 1980's.  The SDS effect seems exaggerated to my ears, but to each their own.  He's now playing around with Ohm F speakers that he also reconditioned, so he's really into non-monitoring sound.
