Noel at Skylan says rice.
I used rice with my Skylan stands without issue. I would think any other material typically used would also work. Sand, metal shot, etc.

I used cat litter to fill my Skylans - the clumping kind of litter, not the old fashioned clay kind.

I have long used cat litter after one experience of straining sand years ago. Not Skylan stands in my case.

Birdseed.
a couple of bags (unopened ) of Metal Shoot
would be more dense. But aren't we really
talking about quibbles, small change?
Brings to mind, "we've got bigger fish to fry"
"Don't worry about the Splinter in your neighbors eye..."

I used silica sand--very dry. Made the stands very heavy and they have no air pockets.

Use the 'unscented' litter. Absolutely no odor.
