NuPrime IDA-8 suitable for Magnepan speakers?
« on: 25 Dec 2016, 03:48 am »
After nearly forty years of faithful service, my Phase Linear model 300 Series Two amplifier has overheated and died. I have been using it with various preamps, most recently an NAD. It has sounded wonderful with my vintage Design Acoustic D12 speakers. These were very highly rated speakers back in the 1970's, known for their open, spacy, omnidirectional sound. They still sound good, supplemented with an SVS sealed box sub-woofer.
I may get the Phase Linear repaired, but its failure has got me thinking about getting new equipment. Reviews on the IDA-8 have been excellent. Particularly appealing are its quick transient response, accuracy, warmth and quiet background. These characteristics would seem to match well with some Magnepan speakers that I am interested in - either the MMGs or the .7s. Either would go well with my SVS sub, which is considered fast and musical.
My question for the forum is whether the NuPrime amp would have the necessary power, and the right kind of power, to drive the Magnepans well. The Maggie's are known to need quite a bit of power, driven into 4 ohms. The Magnepan site suggests that a suitable amp should have about double the power into 4 ohms that it does into 8 ohms. Most amps have more power into 4 ohms, although not many have double. The NuPrime is rated as having 100 watts into both 8 and 4 ohms. This is the only amp I have seen with the same rating into both loads. Is this a characteristic of the hybrid class A/D design? Is this something thatYVD I should worry about in driving the Magnepans, or would the NuPrime be stable driving a 4 ohm load?
I am a new forum member. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to AC!  Many moons ago I owned most of the Phase Linear products.

Welcome Smithers!!
A friend of mine has some very good speakers (VMPS 626R speakers with an awesome VMPS 215/VSS sub) that like some power behind them.  He bought an IDA-8 on my recommendation new from a store.  He did not like the sound with that IDA-8 integrated amp near as well as his Onkyo home theater amp that has about 90 watts per channel and thereby returned it for a refund.  He said it wouldn't play near as loud and the highs had much less life to them.  I was recently a VMPS demonstrator and adjusted his speakers in the room so that they sounded much better than his previous speaker locations.  I was surprised by his description of the sound as the 626Rs have both a ribbon midrange and ribbon tweeter and sound very detailed and dynamic, especially with the sub.

Hello, Smithers.

Welcome to AC.

I have owned an IDA-8 for about 15 months now. I have used it to power Fritz Loudspeakers LS/5-R speakers 83.5dB, Adelphos two-way monitors 87dB, and GR Research single driver LGK speakers ??dB. While the IDA-8 managed to push the LS/5-Rs and sound pretty good, it was always clear to me that it was not pushing them with authority. The speakers wouldn't sing like they can with 150w or 200w. Granted, the MMGs and .7s are different speakers, but I would not recommend choosing the IDA-8 for these speakers. I believe you'd have a similar experience to my situation.

However, paired with the Adelphos or higher sensitivity speakers, the IDA-8 is a great amp. It's very useful and it's tremendously mobile. My wife and I took it along on our travels into the SW US and north into BC for 5 months this past summer. It's sitting in a friend's house awaiting my return to the States. I really like the IDA-8.

Just two days ago, I bought the Nuprime ST-10 amp for my LS/5-R speakers (waiting for delivery). It's rated 150w, but I'm told the actual power is closer to 190w/ch.  I expect my speakers to sing in a couple days. I got to audition the ST-10 with two different speakers, 5 DACs, and 2 preamps in April, so I'm confident it'll power my LS/5-Rs comfortably.

Click on over to the Nuprime circle and ask the question. There are several AC members who own the IDA-8 who may have experience with the MMGs or .7s

Regards,

Michael

I own a pair of MMG's and 1.6's.  I can tell you that they sound best with a high current and high wpc amp.  I am not saying that they can't sound good with a lower powered amp, it's just that they will sound better with a quality powerful amp.  I ran mine with a Parasound A21 (250 wpc at 8 ohms/400 at 4 ohms), Pass Labs X250 250 wpc at 8 ohms/500 at 4 ohms).  I tried a Class D Audio CDA 250 (300VA power transformer) kit amp rated at 250wpc and it runs out of steam with my MMG's.  They still sound good with this amp but the sound is not as dynamic.

The high power and high current tremendously aid in dynamics, bass and musicality.
