A friend needs a quality streamer in the $1-3K range. I don't stream (yet) so I can't help him.

Not to hijack but i was also looking in the general area for a streamer...more in the 1K range.

Has anyone got a hold of the elac discovery unit? Not sure if its out yet....but looks interesting for those of us who are not DIY

By way of reference- to stream i currently use my iphone>Tidal>ifiDSD dac. Which by the way provides shockingly stellar performance. But I have to plug and unplug the ifi every time and im looking for a more permanent solution

I have the Cambridge CXN. It sounds extremely good, I use it direct via xlr to a pair of Maraschino monoblock amps. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has.

"Streamer" seems to mean different things to different people. I don't know it, but the Salk unit seems to be a DLNA server (stream sender) and also may have USB outputs for playing directly from the internal drive. Some of the others are strictly DLNA renderers (stream receivers) with no music storage internally.

I slowly pulled myself into the computer age and am quite satisfied. Now there seems to be a better way. I need a primer in these things. Understand that a dedicated, purpose built machine should be better. But what are the sonic advantages, what conveniences would be gained/lost, and is it worth $$$$ to move up?

I'm the last person to pretend expertise, but I do believe the Salk is like other units like Aurender where an internal hard drive is accessed (also externals can be as well) and the software does its thing to "stream" the music as you desire.

On the Sonore site somewhere they explained server vs renderer, but in some cases they overlap and the lines get blurred.

These days you don't need much of a PC to have digital playback. In fact, a NAS on your Ethernet with a device like uRendu and you are good to go. I use a music server from HAL, uRendu, and JRiver on the HAL and thanks to those who went before me, I am very happy. Totally eliminates the need for a USB cable into your dac.

A good description of what you may be concerned about with some music servers here and how this device avoids those issues:

What a swamp. I tried reading that article and could make no sense out of all the acronyms.

It appears someone has to be an expert on the subject before they can learn about it.

If I can do it, trust me, anyone can. I had some struggles getting JRiver set up. My biggest issue was I found multiple computers named the same in my devices on my music server which prevented me from accessing the computer with my iPad. I deleted all of them and renamed the music server to something else. Getting the DLNA set up in JRiver was easy and it recognized the uRendu quickly. Click on it in the JRiver Playing Now section, then click on the Audio tab below that and it is ready to go in JRiver. Sonore gives you a web based set-up and access to the uRendu so that is pretty easy to do. And Jesus does respond rather quickly to questions. Most the of the problems were me, not them. Well, none them.

That device is so worth the 20 minutes of set-up it isn't even funny. Stellar performance.

It's very simple to get going. Worst case I'm sure someone lives in your area that could swing by. Second is I'm sure phone support is available even if I have to do it.
