GK1 pcb size?

What is the size of the GK1 pcb?

Hi George,

Nice to see you here!  How's Sacto and how's the business?

265mm x 80mm for the analog pcb, but there are also other pcbs for the Remote version.  The largest of these is the relay input/output pcb, and this one is 234mm x 68mm;  the digital control pcb is about half this size.  The keypad pcb is 128mm x 71mm.

For the manual switching version, wich pcb's are required and what are their sizes?
Plus, what height have the transformers?

I was easily able to fit the manual version of the GK-1 in a standard 2U rack case........then I removed it from the rack case cause the result was extremely ugly and have jammed it into another as yet unfinished case.

The only note I would make about the 2U case is that if you can find an extra deep version (ie deeper than 255mm) then grab that cause it'll make positioning and sheilding the transformers that much easier.

Altronics in Oz do a 360mm deep 2U case. Mind you it's nearly double the cost of the basic 2U case.

Hi Filipe,

There are two pcbs.  The analog pcb is 265mm x 80mm, and the manual switching input/output pcb (which is mounted at the rear of the case and carries all RCA inputs and outputs) is 232mm x 54mm.  The transformers (two of them) are each 60mm wide, 80mm long, and 52mm tall.

There is no keypad pcb, since all switching is performed with a high quality Lorlin wafer switch.

Why, pray, did you think the "standard" 2RU case looked so uggerly??

My GK-1R fits nicely into an Altronics case.  I in fact used a 3RU case but this was only because I needed the extra depth ("Z") to allow for 4x6v gel-cells lying on their sides ... these to give +/-12v to power an MC "head-amp".  In the "X" and "Y" dimensions, though, the standard Altronics case fits fine!  My transformers are shielded from all the PCBs by a steel divider which runs from back to front.

I managed to get the GK-1R into a 2U case by suspending the analog board on two aluminum L-brackets mounted to the at the top of the chassis.  It's a very quiet build.

Because it was. The look of the tubes as they poked through the lid didn't appeal. In fact they looked really odd. I really don't like the basic powdercoat finish - if I was to reuse the case for a GK-1 I'd get it powdercoated a different colour.  In truth it'll probably be binned unless someone wants a slightly bashed up box to suit a GK-1M for the cost of postage.

It also didn't help the aesthetics that they were surrounded by a field of screw heads. If I'd thought about it long and hard I should have mounted the analogue PCB on wall plugs from the base rather than through the lid.

In a nutshell I think the basic case is ugly and my very average metalwork skills certainly didn't add to it. I'd already made a timber fascia for it but still had to refinish it - it needed a light sandblast and new powdercoat. I couldn't fix the field of screws. So I was never going to be happy with it.

In the end, for less than the cost of refinishing a 2U case, I acquired a prototype Swift chassis from Hugh and have found that to be a far more aesthetic solution.....well it will be when it's finished!

I agree Seano, I didn't like the idea of all those screw heads but I dooo like seeing the glowing valves!

I did something similar to Peter ... made up 'L' brackets to support the main Analogue board and the Remote board. These are bolted to the side of my 3RU case and to a 2mm steel divider which goes from front to back inside the case, to isolate all the transformers.

The PCBs are attached to the brackets in as "isolating" a fashion as I could think of - the corners rest on little squares of 10mm thick Sorbothane, with a 3mm nylon bolt through the centre.
