Burning a Multi-Channel Disc
« on: 18 Nov 2004, 07:28 pm »
Is it possible to burn a DVD-A in your home on a PC or MAC that could be played on a universal DVD player like Pioneer Elite DV45A or Denon or whatever?  What would be required in terms of hardware and software?

Just curious

Yes, with limitations. DiscWelder Bronze is the only package I've seen that can do it, but there may be others.  The main limitation is that the MLP - the lossless compression used by DVD-A - is not supported, so you're limited in terms of what formats you can put on the disk.  I think you can do 5.1 at either 44.1 or 48, or you can do stereo at up to either 96 or 192.  'Real' DVD-A supports 5.1 at least up to 96.

I don't believe that it includes much in the way of recording/manipulation tools, so you have to have the 5/6 tracks already available as .wav files. I don't think it adds a normal DD soundtrack, so it's only useable on DVD-A players, not dvd players (I could be wrong there)

Still, at only $99, it's not a bad deal.
