OK, so it happens to me over and over, I buy a bunch of LP's/CD's and one of the ones I don't think will be that good is just killer.

The latest one is the Blues Brothers soundtrack.

What are some of your surprises in that bunch you bought?

A little different since I expected it to be killer.  But then, the fact that it is as good or better than expected is a very pleasant surprise: Patricia Barber Live: A Fortnight In France.

Jayhawks: "Tomorrow the Green Grass", "Hollywood Town Hall", and "Rainy Day Music".  Jackman scores big at the used CD store!  All three albums filled with really good music.   I don't know what you call this type of music but I like it.

Another good CD I picked up was "Dawn" by My Morning Jacket.  Cool feel to this record.  Give it a chance if you see it in the reduced or used rack.

That's that!

1. Tom Waits "Real Gone"

Some of his songs are a bit "difficult," but there a couple of songs on this CD that must rank with the most profound music ever written.

2. Carla Bruni "Quelguiun M'a Dit"

She's an Italian supermodel who sings in French.  Guilty Pleasure CD of the year.

Jayhawks are classified as "Alt Country" and they are indeed quite good.  If you liked those, also get "Rainy Day Music".

Some other artists that most people like who like the Jayhawks:

Uncle Tupelo
Wilco
Son Volt
Blue Rodeo
The Byrds
Gram Parsons

just to name a few...

Ryan Adams - Gold

Thanks for the info on the Jayhawks.  I picked up Rainy Day Music and like it a lot.  If you like Ryan Adams, you probably know this, but his old band Whiskytown is really good.  My favorite Ryan Adams record is Heartbreaker.  It's raw and has some great harmonica.  I caught his show in Chicago a couple years ago and he totally rocked on acoustic.  He was as drunk as I have ever seen a performer (and even tried to get some weed from the audience) but he sounded great and never missed a note!  Great performer.

David Byrne's "Look into the Eyeball" (enough pop riffs and hooks to be of this earth),   8)
Boz Scaggs' "Dig" (great sound and tasty tunes for the ladies),
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Endangered Species" (Skynyrd Unplugged),
Doyle Bramhall II's "Welcome" (reminds me of Hendrix)  :!:   and . . .

an honorable mention to Rob Babcock's "Encyclopedia Metallicus."

Yup, that's how I first heard of him.

Which Whiskeytown do you like the best?

I like "Stranger's Almanac" the best.

Another one to add to the cd list is Subdudes - Annunication

David Jacobs-Strain, Ocean or a Teardrop.

This guy is a killer guitar player (acoustic guitar/blues) with a really good voice.  I like everything about this one, performance, recording quality, listenability

Try it, you'll like it

A long time ago, I joined the Columbia House CD club...ordered my 10 CDs for a $1 (or whatever it was), and when I received the order, they had made a mistake sending me Lonnie Smith's Live at Club Mozambique instead of one of the ones I had listed.  *Loved* it!  It was my first intro to Hammond organ jazz, and since then I have become a big fan...

It's about time for a rock band with some attitude!  This one is excellent.

The most recent cd I've bought that I think is killer is the new Drive By Truckers cd - The Dirty South.

I love Damien Rice.

Also recently:

Carbon Leaf - Indian Summer
Keane - Hopes and Fears

Both are killer IMO.
