Gustard 20x dac
« on: 1 Nov 2016, 03:33 am »
Hi new here, I read a lot of good and interesting blogs  and reviews about GUSTARD X20U DAC, Have a question,  it has  2 x  ESS Technology ES9018 Sabre Reference 32 bit Dac chip
There are  new chips out now the top of the line  one is the flagship , ESS Technology professional series  ES9038 PRO Sabre series. It has  a dynamic range 0f 140 db.
Can the chip be swapped out and the new chip put in  for upgrade tweak, or does it have to be done at the factory. ?

Welcome to AC!  I have a friend with the Gustard.  The board is likely designed for the current chips (did see the inside).  Here is some additional info - http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?19489-It-s-finally-here-guys-The-new-ESS-9038PRO-Game-changing-DAC-chip!/page9

Thanks every one for the welcome,  and thanks Phil, for the info on the new ES9038 PRO Sabre DAC chip. A little more complex than  I thought, now I wish I was a engineer.

Hi, Soundboard.

I've got the X20u and love what it does for my system.

When I read about the new '38' chips, I got pretty excited about the possibility of dropping them into my
DAC, but it doesn't look like that will happen. However, Gustard will soon debut their new dual ES9028 DAC in December, I believe.

I'm content to wait  a while for a dual ES9038 to appear before I think about upgrading my X20u (famous last words).

Yes, the new X20U Pro will be available late this month.  $899.  Now using two of the new ESS 9028 DAC chips......instead of the 9018s in the current model. Have yet to hear from anyone how much better the new DAC chips are but Resonessence charges $1000 just to upgrade their Mirus DAC ($5000) to a Mirus Pro ($6000) and the only difference is the upgraded DAC chips.  For $100 less than the upgrade cost you get a whole DAC with the same chips.  Got to love the direct Chinese products.  Just super value.
