Jriver with Linux question
« on: 17 Oct 2016, 08:49 pm »
Hello All
I have given in and allowed my 15 year old computer savvy son build a computer to serve up my files. He started out with a Raspberry Pi but I got pops so we graduated to a gigabyte brix computer with 8 gig ram and solid state hardrive connected to my Esoteric K03x, Thinking the Raspberry pi was not fast enough. The new computer works fast and the audio quality is great but I still notice pops within the first second or two after the music starts. He has turned off most every function that he thought would contribute to the pops after going to the Jriver forums etc. we are perplexed that the phenomenon is not repeatable at all times. Sometimes I'll get a pop and then sometimes I won't with the same song. I've tried rapidly changing songs half of them will have a pop, others will not. I'm looking for some advice. He has been in the settings trying to remedy this. We are now searching for some help. Thanks in advance, pete

Also, JRiver Linux is somewhat of a recent thing so they may not have all the bugs worked out of it.

Thanks for your input! My son is reading many websites to optimize Linux and the SSD. We are trying eliminate the swap partition on the SSD which could be making the click.

Tell me more about why raspberry pi setup up?  It doesn't pop for me and every stereo (room) in my house has one and files are served from a Synology NAS, i do use hifiberry hat (daughter card) for either a dac or spdif output.

Hi
I use USB to the Esoteric K03x DAC input. The Raspberry Pi was also connected through USB. I have a second Pi using Kodi in my office and there are no clicks. I use jriver in my main system so I can get native DSD. The clicks are at the very beginning of the music within the first 2 seconds. My son read that getting rid of the swap partition can resolve some clicks. He is learning how to do that.

Naw, keep the swap, remove unnecessary services so things don't swap.  i will have to check my configuration to even see if i have a swap file enabled,  but it's easy to remove the swap, just edit the /etc/fstab file and comment out the swap line and reboot.   I assume you are running MPD on the rPI?

Keep the raspberry pi headless, without a gui, xmbc and all the unnecessary services that you don't need and that's a good start.    If you can paste the "systemctl status" here, I can probably tell you what to kill off.

BTW, some dacs don't handle PCM to DSD transitions or just off to PCM or off to DSD, but if you read through the MPD changelog, the developers there have been addressing those issues.

Jim
The previous post, I was lying about the raspberry pie that  was previously in my room. Currently I am using a gigabyte brix.  My son tried to remove the swap partition and somehow it did not turn out the way he wanted so I think he is reverting back. He is now wondering if the USB   Is too close to the bus and making it pop or click.  He has removed all of the sound controlling options/devices on the computer leaving just J river to do the work.  This is starting to get beyond me so I will have him reply when he gets home from school with more technical information so that we may be able to remedy this. Thank you for all replies, Pete

Random click can indeed be a USB CRC error
Trying different ports might help
Maybe this link will help your son in trouble shooting this type of error
