Inexpensive disc player
« on: 10 Oct 2016, 05:53 pm »
My system is based on streaming through DLNA. However, when friends come to listen, they often want to hear CDs or other discs. My transport has died and is not repairable.

So, in the Discless Circle, who would like to recommend a disc transport?  I have the Cambridge CXC and the Emotiva ERC-3 on my list, but each sells for US $500, which is my maximum budget for this. I'd rather spend less, as I hardly ever use it.

Should I just buy a cheap Blu-Ray player from Best Buy and call it good?  If so, which one?

Other ideas?

The NAD C 516BEE is the best under $500.00 player I've ever owned.

If it's only to play CDs, a dedicated CD player is probably best choice in low-cost players, having a specific 780nm wavelength laser matched to Redbook CD tracks and a 44.1kHz clock.

You can get a NAD C 516BEE Refurbished player with a 1-year warranty for @229 shipped from Spearit Sound.

Hi Mike,  I'm using a cheap Blue-Ray from Best Buy and it sounds great. The Blue-Ray soundtracks sound better than most of my cds. I have more of a (quest for the best sound) system in another room. I needed a cheap cd player that rated real good and my find was a Onkyo C-7030 that I paid about 189.00 brand new. Sounds great and the build quality seems tank tough!
I was looking at the NAD's but this one tracked me down....take care...Mark Korda

Consider getting a CD/DVD/Blueray ripper for less than $30.  When someone brings something over, rip it while you jabber - then you have the best playback sound, you have a new recording in your collection and it's cheap.

Using an old Sony X77ES CDP with copper chassis.  Found this one for 400.00 and I was able to use it as a transport. A-1 plus for sound quality and have not needed to upgrade cables.

Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions! Glad to find I can get something for much less than $500.

I second the Marantz players.  I have a couple of friends that have Marantz CD players and they sound great.
