Recently I have been trying different resistors in the tweeter of my 1.6's to tone down some sibilants. I have used the following resistors-
The standard 1 ohm 10 watt sand resistor
A Mills 1 ohm 12 watt
A Deulund Carbon Silver 1 ohm 10 watt
There are definite differences between the 3.
They all work to tone down brightness and sibilants. The Sand and the Mills did this the best but there were trade offs.
The Sand did not seem as clear as the other 2 but it had a warm character. The Mills was a little more clear and was a bit warmer than the sand but the mid range seemed a bit pushed back and the sound stage was just a bit smaller. It was still a very nice sound though and I could live with the trade offs.
The best of the lot and most expensive was the Deulund. It was perfectly clear and transparent sounding as if no resistor was in place, but it did tame the sibilants and brightness without adding any warmth. The only drawback is that it did not tone down the sibilants and brightness much as the first 2. I am going to jump up to the 1.2 ohm 10 watt and see what that does. Parts Connexion has these on sale right now. I would stay away from the 5 watt as they can get hot.
A draw back to the Deulund is that the silver leads are too short and I had to solder on longer leads. I used silver solder and some spare 16g speaker wire.
