Hello,

I'm told that I want the lowest possible capacitance cable I can find, is this true ???

I need a pair of RCA’s between my Scout and phono preamp -and- a pair of RCA’s between my phono preamp and preamp.

Can/should these two pairs be the same type cables ???

What do you recommend for between my Scout and phono preamp ???

What do you recommend for between phono preamp and preamp ???

What about the “VPI JMW 1M PHONO CABLE SERIES 2 W/SHIELD RCA TO RCA” -- I’m told they are a decent cable but not great cable ???  Does anyone have any experience with these ???

Thanks for any help.

I use a Cardas Neutral Reference phone cable (to EAR834P, no mods, Tele 12AX7's), never used anything else, never wanted to.  It doesn't get any lower capacitance than the Cardas cables.  In fact, you may find it hard to find published measurements from other cable manufacturers--if you believe in measurements?

It's a little more expensive than the VPI.  I've heard that Discovery cable makes the VPI from the same cable as in the tonearm itself, and that you can purchase the same Discovery branded cable for cheaper.  You might want to do some checking.  Of course all of this is dependent on your system..  You might post your system and listening preferences so others can get an idea of your goals.

I use Clarity Labs Foxfire bought from Bill Baker at Response audio between the phono and preamp.  Good stuff, great guy, reasonably priced.

If you're trying to use cables as a tone control--which alot of people do---you'll just have to audition.

Cheers,
Brad

The best advice I can give you is to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the table.  Worry about the cables in a few months down the road when you have gotten a handle on the performance of your new rig.  Then and only then will you be able to appropriately evaluate IC's imo.  ymmv.

I'd give Ridgestreet Audio a call...

What phono pre are you using?

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

Interesting thread Marbles, but not I'm ready to rewire tonearm yet since this is my first high-end turntable, and since it's a new unit I think for now I'll take Josh's advice and enjoy it for a couple months until I get a handle on the performance, adjustments, etc.

Here's my equipment:  VPI Aries Scout with JMW-9 tonearm and Dynavector 10x5 - my phono pre is a Parasound PPH-100

The reason I started this thread is right now all I have for interconnects are some cheap Radio Shack cables, and I thought if I got some good cables now then I could burn-in the turntable and cables all at the same time.

You will want a cable that is extremely well shielded.  I'm using a relatively cheap cable between my Scout and Cornet made by Synergistic Research.  It cost about $90 and is dead quiet.  It's their entry-level cable having passive discrete shielding, called Alpha Sterling.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I ordered the VPI cable today -- can't wait to get everything next week!

Hi bmed,
Where'd you get that bit of information? The Cardas spec for Neutral Reference ICs is more like 19pf/ft, which is OK, but hardly anything to brag about.

I used to use Cardas Golden Reference (12pf/ft) for my phono and other ICs but I found everything improved after I switched to really low capacitance ICs (3pf/ft) I made myself.

Ulas -- more details please:

What is and where did you get the 3pf/ft cable ?

What connectors did you use ?

As I said, I made them myself. You can see pix in a AA thread here: http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/cables/messages/99905.html
and here: http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/cables/messages/99946.html

Connectors are gold bullet plugs.

The fact my phono ICs are unshielded seems freak some people out. It works for me but it is not suitable for anyone living in an urban or high RFI environment.

Interesting.  I have RS Audio Illume interconnects -- silver wires with silver bullet plugs. They look almost identical.  They are good.  Beat AQ Jaguar in my system.
