BDP-2: Internal vs. External hard drive?
« on: 2 Aug 2016, 07:47 pm »
1. Is there a significant performance difference using an internal disk drive with the BDP-2 versus providing the music via an external USB Drive?
2. Do the same drive current requirement limits apply to an internally installed drive as apply to the USB Drives?
3. Is an internal drive user-installable or does that void the warranty?

Thanks.

I have tried both ways. I found little difference in sound quality between external and internal. The internal uses a SATA connection, and I believe provides more current, but any contemporary 2.5 drive should be adequately powered by USB Bus current. IMO, the sheer practicality of an external drive more than made up for any subtle benefits from internal drive location. it's so much easier/faster to disconnect your external drive and attach it directly to your computer for DB changes, taking advantage of fast write speeds of my SSD, and USB 3.0 connections.

There is no impact on warranty with internal drive. Bryston publishes full instructions for consumer internal drive installation.

:thumb:  on external drives via USB connection. I use multiple 500-GB G-Drives connected to a powered Startech Hub.

.....although an internal drive may have an advantage of massive capacity in a single unit. Haven't tried it with BDP-1, doubt it would be optimal/beat pocket G-drive route.

cheers

Thanks, guys. I did search the forum for previous items on this subject, but I must have been using the wrong search terms.  :duh:
