Energy Efficient Bugle
« on: 10 Nov 2004, 09:11 am »
Hi to all.

Recently I built a Bugle for a friend, who thinks it's great, obviously!!  But he's already complaining about the short battery life.  Before we shell out for some OPA2137's I was wondering if anyone else has tried them, or can recommend any other less thirsty opamps?

Also, would changing just one device, U3 I'd guess, be a sensible option, giving battery life of about 50 hours?

Gain is standard 40dB.

Thanks
Glyn

I built the power supply and it has already paid for itself.  I perceive no increase in noise, so it isn't a compromise in quality for me.

Here are some good notes on opamps: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/opamps.html

Pay close attention to which ones are dual vs single channel and which ones come in DIP8 form factor.

The AD8620 on a BrownDog adapter might be a good choice for the Bugle, but I haven't tried it.

Building the Bugle power supply is always another option.

Thanks for the replies.

The PSU might become an option.

My pal had a few hundred LPs collecting dust in his attic, which I was trying to beg!  Sadly for me, he got a turntable of ebay, lent my Bugle (& PSU) & started going through them.  He's now got his own Bugle, on batteries, as he thought he'd just use it occasionally.  He's on his third set of batteries & hasn't played a CD in 2 months..

Cheers.
