BDP-2 generating too mcuh heat
« on: 12 Jul 2016, 02:11 pm »
Hello!

I have a BDP-2 with factory-installed IAD, S/N 652. It is generating substantial amount of heat. The top panel gets very hot but tht the bottom panel - where the heat-transferring devices (I think this is what they are by looking at the photos online, I have not opened the machine) are located (rear section of the bottom panel, more to the left) gets even hotter. You cannot put your hand on it for more than a second or two, it is that hot.

I do not think this is healthy for the components inside. Can anyone else confirm this or suggest something?

I am using flash drives with the BDP-2 so there is no extraneous draw of current on the machine's power supply.

Cheers!

Hi Anton,

There are two components that generate a significant amount of head in the BDP-2, its two power regulators (bottom left facing) and its CPU (top right facing).  The system board contains safety's to ensure the system board doesn't become to hot that something fails, the system board will turn itself off at that point and the BDP becomes unresponsive.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris!

Thanks for the reply!

I think this is what happened to my BDP-2 a few times - I didn't put two and two together till you just mentioned it. In each of these cases the display went blank and the buttons stopped working. I pressed the power button and it rehooted the machine as if I was turning it on from standby mode.

Can you tell me if these shutdowns were associated with heat overload?

If they are, what can I do to prevent them?

Summers are extremely hot here in Croatia and extremely humid. BDP-2 runs substantially cooler when the weather is more tolerable.

Cheers!

Although these are discontinued, you can still find them used.  You could also make a fan setup with some 12 volt dc fans.

Possibly, I'm not sure what you have above or below your BDP.  If you need it to run cooler start by separating it from the rest of your gear (ie place it on a shelf by itself) to ensure heat from another  piece of gear isn't influencing it.

Chris,

Is placing a BDA-2 below (or above) a BDP-2 a bad idea?

I have BDA-1 beneath my BHA-1, which can get hot.
No problems.

In order top to bottom

BDP
BDA (if your using a dac)
Shelf
Rest of gear

Is how my three setups are configured

That's not entirely true, one is in its own enclosed space, but it's in my basement

Hi Chris!

The BDP-2 sits on top of the BDA-2. Beneath is a wooden shelf and there's plenty of air above the BDP-2. I still think it gets uncomfortably warm.

If you'd like, I can place it in SM so you can have a look and see whether the front panel becomes unresponsive due to heat or if it's a software bug.

Cheers!

I have a BHA-1 on top of my BDA-2, on top of my BDP-2. All of that is in a cabinet that is enclosed with a door on the front. The back is open, and I added a 120mm computer fan that I toned down to run at only about 600 rpm. It's completely inaudible.

Without that fan, the BHA-1 predictably overheats within a short time of use. With that fan and very minor air circulation, the whole thing never gets more than warm to the touch. I have similar situations for my Bryston amps, processor, and other equipment. That very minor airflow makes an enormous difference.
