Hello all,

I'm trying  to set up a turntable for someone...
I can't quite read the model # on this cart...  I don't want to have to dismount it because I'm not good at installing cartridges.

(Trying to find the model # so I can look up the anti-skate setting)

Denon 7*8 5*0, its MC or MM?
Any lateral photo?

Not seeing the cartridge side I would say its a old DL1000A MC or a resemblant model.
That number Denon 7*8 5*0 seems the serial.

I have no idea if it is MM or MC..  My amp has a built in MM, and it seems to work (although I have to turn it up a little louder than a previous turntable).

Hey FRM, thanks for the tip on the DL1000...

I did some checking and found out the model number is located UNDERNEATH the cartridge...

So, I stuck my iPhone underneath it and found out...




It's a DL207...

Which is an MC cart...

But I am playing it with an MM phono-pre (built in to amp)

I have to turn it up louder than my other sources but it still works. Would I gain anything by getting a proper MC pre?

The DL207 outputs 0.2mV w/a proper phono stage you will get primarily more gain(sound volume), I would use this way for spare money until a irresistible phono stage offer appear on the used market.
But if funds are plenty I would look a 6SN7 based phono.

I'm finding out that I'm not a fan of MC carts (or at least this one)...

It's got tons of DETAIL, but I miss the lushness of the MM based phono I'm used to!

Not sure what's going on here, but most MM phono sections won't have enough gain for a 0.2mV cart.   Typical MM output is around 4 or 5mV.   Maybe it's a HOMC ?   Try a couple of 1K resistors in parallel with the input jacks, or maybe it needs a little warm up time.

According database DL207 isnot a HO.

Low output, rated at .2,  but I've found where one measured at .4 mV. 
If the sound is not to your liking, I'm sure someone around here might take it off your hands or swap a nice MM.

Don't judge the entire category of MC cartridges based on one MC cartridge that is not being amplified correctly, and almost certainly not seeing the correct load impedance.

That Denon wants to see an impedance of about 100 ohms, and your MM phono section is almost assuredly 47K ohms. The result will be a rising high frequency, making the cartridge sound bright and thin.

You are far from giving that Denon a fair shake, let alone, condemning all MC cartridges based on your drastic misconfiguration of one example.

Yes, you will gain correct cartridge loading, and the ability to hear the cartridge correctly.

I live in Altadena, about 25 minutes from your location. If you want to hear the cartridge the way it should sound, you can bring it to my place and I'll play it through my MC section of my preamp. If you still do not like it, I might buy it from you.

Sorry to keep harping this, but I hate to see you give up on a possibly great cartridge, due you not being able to hear it correctly.

Thanks so much for that offer! Wish I hadn't moved to Louisiana. So many audiophiles in California!

Considering a Grado Blue right now as a trade. I just don't know what to do, but I can't keep listening to this thing through an MM.  Maybe I should put it on the eBay. But I don't even have the original packaging. Don't know how to wrap it for shipping.

Why?? Why did I ever step in the vortex of Vinyl addiction? lol!!
